A small damp hole somewhere in England

I'm currently in the process of creating a very characterful White Scars army, and am considering my options.

Effectively this calls for primarily mobile units - the sort of force that really suits the White Scars background that I love of fast, hit and run attacks, striking the enemy wherever they are weakest, usually behind their battle lines.

So far I know I need a lot of bikes and landspeeders, and a few scouts also work - while they're not very mobile they do fit very well with the army's theme. However I'm faced with a problem - because of the new flyer rules in 6th edition, I need to be able to deal with enemy flyers.

For space marines, the obvious choice would be a Storm Talon - but unfortunately the model is absolutely hideous, and I just refuse to have anything to do with it! However, this seemed to limit my options to hoping for a lucky six...

Until, that is, I happened to be browsing the Forgeworld website and came across this.

However, while I have the rules, information on whether it's actually worth it is almost non-existent on the internet, and my usual source of info is therefore absent...

So my question is have any other players either used or faced one in 6th ed? How effective is it really, and is it a decent answer to my AA dilemma?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

A good alternative would be a battery of 3 hyperios platforms + 1 hyperios coordination-whatever-radar-thingy, I think it costs about 160 pts and is very flyer-killy

Obviously, it's not very mobile ... but I'm sure you could come with something a bit fluffy with it, like dropping them in a Pod with a Techmarine or something, or a Duo or Rhinos with a Techmarine and the platforms inside (might not be possible rules-wise, but who really cares when it comes to those kind of considerations ?) for fast deployment at the start of the battle

I did also see those, and I'm sure they provide a much better AA umbrella.

Unfortunately they just won't work for the White Scars - remember we're talking hit and run here. Drop-podding them in certainly fulfils the hit part - but as they're immobile they can't really do the run bit afterwards!

The key for this army is pure character - I'm not going to take anything, no matter how useful or killy, that doesn't fully fit in with the chosen theme. Within that restriction though, I'll do anything within the rules (and sportsmanship) of the game to give myself any advantage I can...

I guess you should use flying anti-air then, It'd be the best
Stormtalon are a bit fragile, Stormravens are not supposed to be part of the normal Marines and are costy .... same goes for Storm Eagle ... maybe you could go with a Thunderbolt support coming from the Imperial Navy ?

Space Marines are really low on anti-air as soon as you discount the Talon (by the way I concur on your take on it, it's almost as hideous as the StormRaven)

You could make the hyperios platforms fit the fluff since they're automated weapons and easily abandoned. Drop pod them in, fight the battle, and worry about recovering them later (or just set them to fire on anything that approaches and self destruct once they run out of missiles). It's exactly the kind of thing a hit and run commander would love, the firepower they need but without requiring real troops to stand around in a static position.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

That's true, certainly worth considering as an explanation!

No-one run across a Hyperios itself though?

Hmmm... I'l take that as a no, no-one else has used them.

Anyone want to take a guess as to whether they'd be worth it, given my army restrictions and theme?

Sure they are OK,

They can still fire TL Krak missles at tanks when not shooting at flyers. But 1 TL Str 8 shot is not going to be killing very much. I would say youd need at least 2 And then 190 pts is getting expensive for what they do. But I do think they fit your theme very well.
