battle report from my blog www.imperiusdominatus.com

Ventured down to the Vine Inn Gamers last night and played against Tom. Tom is using Deathwing and has asked me if he can use Forge World models Mortis Dreadnought and Achilles Land Raider, which because I am such a sport I had no beef with him doing so. Tom didn't bring the Achilles, but he packed the two Mortis'.

Deployment

Tom won the roll off for choosing table side and deployment, he let me go first, which I guess suits us both as I am medium ranged and Tom is majority close combat.

I deploy bottom left corner and put my Wraiths out front, then the Ghost Arks in a line with the ABs and CCBs behind; the CCBs are on each flank. Like a wally I forget to deploy the unit of 5 Warriors who are on foot and I only remembered about this when writing the report!

Tom deploys top right corner, he has his Vindicators back along with the Dreadnoughts. At the front is the Command Squad with Belial and the Chaplain, and then both the assault cannon units. Strangely the heavy flamer unit is at the back, this unit should have been at the front to get the heavy flamer in range (or deep strike).

* Tactical Notes

Ok, Deathwing, they are always fun to play against as it's a race against time. I need to destroy the Terminators with gauss, tesla and in close combat the Wraiths, before the suckers reach my stuff. My usual tactic when playing against Terminators with Necrons is to whittle the units down and then assault with the Wraiths. The odd sweep attack helps too. This tactic has always worked fine for me. Of course I do leave some units intact depending on threat basis etc.

My plan is to move everything up 12"; I can use the jink save plus night fighting and then next range I'll be in shooty shooty range. I'll use the Overlords to sweep Vindicators and tackle depleted Terminator units, though tesla and gauss will do the heavy lifting and deplete Deathwing numbers while Wraiths move in and sweep up.

Turn 1

Tom attempts to seize the intiative and fails.

I move all units up 12". I run both Wraith units, though not too far as I do not want them counter assaulted by Terminators, plus I want to spread them out so no nasty Vindicators blow them to bits. Both Overlords move flat out in their CCBs while the black Overlord (warlord) lands behind a bunker on the far right flank near my table edge, there is Wraiths supporting btw.

Shooting; Annihilaiton Barges snap fire at the closest assault cannon unit, I kill one. That's it for me, as like a dimwit I forget to fire the eldritch lances, ah well.

Tom's turn; Vindicators move forward a little bit while majority of the Terminators come forward.

Shooting; Vindicator blasts a Ghost Ark nearest the warlord Overlord and it loses a hull point and a gauss array, autocannons fire and I do ok on saves, but the second Vindie drops and shell on it and it is wrecked; first blood to Tom! Cyclones blast out and smack the black Overlord's CCB, but cover is strong - 2+ ftw .

Kill points - Necrons: 0 Dark Angels: 1

* Tactical Notes

Ok, not caused much damage this turn, but things are in a nice position; Overlord can sweep something next turn while Wraiths can move up and smash two Terminator units. As long as I put some fire power into those two Terminator units first, then I'll be ok.

Turn 2

Black Overlord moves in the CCB and sweeps the closest Vindicator, but is rubbish and totally misses. Wraiths move up to support the Overlord and are ready to assault some Terminators. Other Wraiths move up and are 3" away from assaulting the depleted unit of Terminators. Ghost Arks move up with one moving onto the landing platform. Annihilation Barges shift around so can put fire power into the Terminators near the black Overlord.

Shooting; Ghost Ark by the depleted Terminators rapid fires into them and kills one while the squad inside manages to take off two hull points from a Mortis with lances and long range gauss fire. Tesla blasts the Terminators by the black Overlord, I think I kill one and that's it.

Assault; Wraiths are 3" away from the depleted Terminators and I roll snake eyes! Luckily the other unit makes combat; they smash the Terminators and only one survives, who cannot attack because is more than 3" away to pile in. At the end of the combat both our units pile in and it's one Termie vs six Wraiths!

Tom pivots one Vindicator on the spot and is ready to point blank fire at the black Overlord, all other units come forward.

Shooting; Vindicator blasts the Overlord's CCB, manages to score weapon destroyed, which I can live with. Other Vindie rips off a gauss array from the Ghost Ark on the landing pad, which then lets autocannons explode it; one Warrior goes down. Storm bolters, krak missiles and assault cannons dakka the Wraiths, they go down like a sack of spuds and only one remains - stupid Wraiths.

Assault; Terminators charge the last Wraith and deck him, they consolidate up right in front of the Warriors in the crater on the landing pad. The Wraiths deck the solo Terminator and consolidate towards Dark Angel lines.

Kill Points - Necrons: 1 Dark Angels: 3

* Tactical Notes

Tom has a nice lead on me at the moment, which I can partly thank to those silly Wraiths flopping their assault roll, ah well. Though, everything is in motion for next turn; one Vindicator has its side armour exposed to my tesla destructors and Wraiths are free to rampage through Dark Angel lines. Add that one Dreadnought has a single hull point left and the depleted Terminators are right in my face.

So, next turn the black Overlord will sweep the closest Vindicator, he only needs 3+ to hit it. I'll move one AB so it can get into the side armour of the other Vindicator while the other two will move up onto the platform and support the Warriors, who have Terminators in their face, which I will gun down. Other Ghost Ark will repair the fallen Warrior and support the other Overlord, both units will attack the closest unit of assault cannon Termies.

Turn 3

Overlord moves 6" and sweeps the Vindicator, which just shot at him, the Vindicator goes boom! Wraiths move up ready to multi assault the remaining Vindicator and Dreadnought, if they have too, but I would rather get the Terminators behind. One AB moves and lands in a crater, it's immobilised but it is in the side armour of the other Vindie and in range of all of Tom's units. Other two ABs land on the landing pad. Surviving Ghost Ark and Overlord move down, Overlord sweeps the assault cannon Terminators and flops. Warriors on foot from the first busted Ghost Ark advance now it is clear and target the undamaged Dreadnought.

Shooting; Ghost Ark rapid fires into the Terminators and one dies, squad inside fires gauss and lances into the damaged Mortis and it is wrecked. Warriors on foot long range fire the remaining Dreadnought, it gets cover thanks to my Wraiths, but Tom fails and it goes boom. Immobilised AB fires into the side armour of the remaining Vindicator and it is wrecked. Warriors and both ABs on the platform dakka the Terminators in front of me and the squad is wiped out. I move both CCBs away from the D.A lines.

Assault; Wraiths attempt to assault the heavy flamer Terminators, I am 5" away and roll 3" distance; wtf Wraiths!?

Dark Angels turn; Tom has taken quite a blow this turn and now has limited ranged fire power. He moves all his Terminators towards the Wraiths, which only two units will get into assault with due to distance and sheer amount of numbers.

Shooting; Wraiths get blasted by storm bolters, krak missiles, assault cannon and heavy flamer and they only fail a single save!

Assault; Belial's unit and the heavy flamer unit charge the Wraiths, Wraiths split their attacks and kill one Terminator from Belial's unit and two from the other unit, but it makes no odds and the Wraiths are smashed to bits and destroyed.

Kill Points - Necrons: 6 Dark Angels: 4

* Tactical Notes

Looks like I've caused Tom a huge amount of damage this turn, in the words of Hannibal, I love it when a plan comes together! Now Tom has no where to run and has little to threaten me. I'll play it safe with my warlord, but everything else can either move up or just hold position and gun down the remaining Terminators.

Turn 4

Remaining Ghost Ark moves up towards the Dark Angels while my Overlord moves away from D.A lines as the other CCB moves up.

Shooting; warlord's CCB moves flat out so I can claim a cover save while the other CCB moves up to the top right corner, long distance for any units to assault me. Ghost Ark dakkas the remaining assault cannon unit and only the Sgt is left, who has a power weapon to threaten me. Everything else fires into Belial's unit, Belial is down to a single wound and a few Terminators die. That's it for me!

Tom moves the depleted flamer unit towards the CCB in the top corner, he is 10" away from assaulting. The lone Sgt just stands in the middle of no where while Belial's unit re-shifts so Belial doesn't get wounds allocated to him.

Shooting; only shooting is krak missiles blasting the warlord's CCB, but they do nothing.

Assault; heavy flamer unit assaults the CCB after rolling 10 for assault range, Overlord use mindshackle Scarabs and two Terminators die while the Overlord finishes the other one off with his trusty warscythe.

Kill Points - Necrons: 7 Dark Angels: 4

* Tactical Notes

Right, this is it. Tom has hardly anything left and this game is in the bag. All I need to do is put all remaining fire power into Tom's Command Squad and perhaps assault the lone Terminator and the game is mine. I may move a unit up for linebreaker, just in case things don't go my way.

Turn 5

CCB carrying the warlord moves 12" towards my own lines while the other CCB comes forward 6" and the Overlord bails out ready to assault the lone Sgt. Everything else remains in position.

Shooting; gauss, lances and tesla destroy Belial's unit, which gets me three kill points in total plus slay the warlord. Lastly, the Overlord charges the single Sgt, who is affected by mindshackles and the Overlord then cuts him to bits.

Necrons win with a wipe out of Dark Angels.

Summary

Excellent game with Tom, I really enjoyed it. Both of us had some crappy dice rolls, twice my Wraiths failed assault and sometimes Tom's Terminators were failing the 2+ saves like they had 6+ saves!

I made some mistakes in this game; I forgot to use my pulses, but not that it mattered and forgot to deploy the other Warrior unit, doh!

Tom played well considering he has been playing only 18 months. His deployed was very good, though the heavy flamer unit should be up the front, not the back. Perhaps he could have been a bit more aggressive when coming forward at me, maybe forgo shooting with the cyclones and run forward maybe - certainly would have put more pressure one me, plus my Wraiths would have assaulted him anyway. I think the only mistakes Tom made was putting the unit of three in front of my Warriors on the landing pad, but I can see his intention.

It was really nice to read a good detailed battle report with pics, especially since my friend runs with a necron list not dissimilar to yours up against a deathwing list very similar to the one im running with at the moment. I have only just started deathwing but what did you think of that list?

For being a 5th edition Necron list, it does quite well,

Thanks about the report.

I thought the Deathwing list was interesting. It has plenty of Terminators, some Vindicators for anti horde and tough vehicles and also Dreadnoughts with skyfire for flyers. I really cannot fault it tbh. I don't think there's anything I would change in it.

Yes, my 'Cron list is a 5th ed list. It's also pretty cool because it works in 6th so well, which means I do not need to dump extra cash into the army; tesla ftw against flyers!
