Hello folks, just looking to plumb that vast depth of fluff knowledge that is Dakka. I remember a piece of fluff from way back that ended with the text 'and something in the warp smiled...' - I believe it was about the fall of Horus. For the life of me, I can't remember where it was from, and it's driving me crazy. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

St Custards

It comes from a short fluff piece which I think was in a White Dwarf in the early 100s, the one with the uber-cool picture of Horus and the Emperor facing off on the battle barge (black and white). The context is he is about to be possessed doing a rite in a Davinite warrior lodge "Just a little blood and ritual, nothing to worry about, I've done this a hundred times before."

Oh man, I was hoping it wasn't in White Dwarf. That's going to take some serious hunting!

Thanks Fotherington-Thomas, I'm once step closer now.

I don't recall ever seeing it in White Dwarf as well (tho given the era its highly likely) but that bit of fiction was at the start of the Space Marine 1st edition rulebook.

That looks.... vaguely familiar. It's possible I saw this a long time ago perhaps, and that's where I saw it.

It's either from the space marine rule book or an early white dwarf (you know, when it was actually quite good).

I think there are a few instances of this being said, as lots of stuff smiles in the warp when it fnarps something up. Is this specifically what you were after htj?

"Listen, Bejand. You are an outstanding staff officer, and I value your loyalty and concern. But why\ does one warrior-lodge initiation on one feral world disturb you so? I've gone through more than twenty of these rituals in the past. I've been a Space Marine and a commander of Marines for more than a century. You need have no fears for me." "My lord, I..." The Warmaster rose abruptly. "Enough." His voice was softer, more dangerous. "I am Horus, General and Warmaster. The first soldier of the Imperium, subordinate only to the Emperor himself. Shall it be said that Horus ran away from a hutful of savages?" Bejand struggled for words. "My lord... I have had - dreams..." His distress was genuine. Horus laid a hand on his shoulder. "Control yourself." he said gently. "You are excused for the rest of the day. Go to the Apothacarion for a psychological update. And then, perhaps, to the Chapel. A few hours' meditation will do you good. Unless you prefer to report these dreams and submit yourself to the Inquisition for psychic potential testing?" Bejand swallowed hard. "No, my lord." "Well, then." Horus patted his shoulder gently. "Go now, and we'll say no more. Meanwhile, I must meet the elders of the Knife of Stone."

And in the Warp, something smiled
