Subject: Tau as allies or stand alone army?

What is Dakka's thoughts as far as Tau being a better ally type force or a no kidding a stand alone force? Which option showcases the Empires strength?
What about Tau with Allies and what codex compliments well?
I run SW, IG, SM, and GK lists primarily and Tau supplement these armies so well.
Thoughts?

Tau and orkz together can make a meaty combo mixing the best of both worlds.

Tau+SM is also a good set up, so is Tau+Eldar...
But I am a Tau pure guy myself. with some of the changes in 6th they work not that bad now. (you would be amazed how much of a difference that 15 inch double-tap makes.)

I've been having good results with Tau and Chaos. space Marines. They can get kitted out to give me a lot of things I'm missing.
Plus it's fun to see someone's face when a Maulerfiend and Heldrake are ripping them apart while broadsides and suits are picking off what's left.

I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

Seems like alot of armies can be good allies for Tau. Personally I see Tau has 2 weaknesses - close combat and psychic defence. I would take allies that can help in one of these 2 areas or both. Eldar can help with both of those for example. I use Necrons myself for melee defence with an overlord in CCB and a Ctan (or wraiths) plus some warriors with a solar pulse cryptek as the round of night fighting really benefits Tau with blacklight.

My friend uses Eldar. Really nasty when they make enemies takes Psykers tests on 3D6. Giving one squad ignore cover and twin linking weapons for free. They have good speed and can keep up with most of our army. They have the jet bike troops that can fairly easily get line breaker and backfield objectives.
Today I ran against a long fang spam and TWC list. Heldrake mopped the hard to get ones while a mauler really took a lot of focused missile fire. He rolled bad to hit and pen topped with my lucky invul rolls, but regardless it kept my suits alive long enough to dominate the field. The speed the mauler has combined with its ability to plow through terrain really makes a nice distraction.
There are some really nasty ways to buff your army. I prefer bringing a couple monsters that just can't be ignored.
