So crusade of fire arrived yesterday and on first reading it looks good. What are your thoughts on it? How is best to run a campaign like this? How many games would you recommend in each phase?
Thanks, sok

I like it a lot. It doesn't feel as personal as the Blood in the Badlands campaign, which allows your characters to gain extra items, lose stats, gain stats, lose items and so on, nor does it allow units to gain experience or bonuses like you can in Blood in the Badlands, but it also offers much more freedom as you don't have set rosters, and can decide week to week what models you want to use. Since it doesn't have army tokens like Blood in the Badlands you don't need to keep track of which armies have moved and what happens to defeated armies, and gives players more flexibility about when they will play games and against who.
I really like the Games Mastering suggestions, and the 'end of phase' battles. Especially the battle for the bunker scenario!
Personally, I'd let each turn run for one week, and then have the 'end of phase' battle the week after. This means the campaign would run for nine weeks. So you'd have a round of challenges the first day, then a week to play the games, then finish the turn. Then another round of challenges, another week the play the games, then finish the turn. Then play the end of phase battle, and place flags as needed.

Yeah we were discussing this last night during the game.
We were thinking of more games per phase though, maybe up to 6. With side missions and arena battles that could be instigated by GM where the combatants are teleported to the arena by DE. The winner gaining campaign bonuses.
I am going to build a sector map and area tiles by Xmas and we will start in the new year.
I will report on progress.

I don't think there's any need to set a limit, really. You only gain an advantage if you win, so if two players want to play a dozen games in a week, it's going to even out. Unless one of those players is running a bs list or is just way better than his opponent, anyway.
Having said that, the more games you play, the higher your chance to score extra points for your personal score via the Grand Warlord traits. So some players could distance themselves that way, I guess. I don't see it becoming a massive problem, to be honest.
What are you guys thinking for a map? We're lucky enough to have a few players with Planetary Empires sets, so we can set up most of the map with tiles. But that's still a big, bulky map covered in flags and buildings that needs to be transported around, or stored at the games store. I was maybe thinking hex based graph paper, but then you lose that awesome three dimensional tactile interaction with the map. I'm also thinking about building some wall pieces, casting them in silicone rubber, and then making them in Plaster to create a bunker table. Should keep me out of trouble over christmas and new years, and certainly a lot cheaper than Forgeworlds Zone Mortalis set!

I was thinking of creating a 2 x 1 har board tile and setting up the planet tiles on that. Each tile would be 2cm diam I think. I may need to make it a bit bigger but it wouldn't be that much bigger.
Alternatively I will make each planet out of foam board and 3D the tiles for that planet along with a hole for each flag.
Like you it will keep me busy!

Sums up my thoughts there.
Don't limit the number of games per phase. Limit the length of the phase. This varies from group to group based on how often you get together and play.

A good review that's sums up how I feel too. Having said that I think some of the fun here will be the initial work and prep. As far as GM ing goes, I enjoy that style of gaming as I play roleplay games anyway and it will add to the whole experience.

So an update. We are planning to start the first Friday in feb. got the board tiles and busy creating special missions, golden flag locations and various tracking charts.
We have decided to say tht each battle should be played twice to give chance of revenge. Once all players have played each opponent on a planet twice then that will be phase end. We reckon it will be around a month to two for each phase.
We will include personal points and campaign (faction) points. Personal points can be spent on reinforcements and extras can be earned by HQ's challenging HQ's in the arena.
Busy, busy!
I shall update as we go and post any rules or missions we come up with.

Ok so my good friend and other GM has announced to one and all that the campaign is due to start next week!
So now I have a panic on, I have got the booklet to Finnish that contains the special missions, golden flag rules and record sheets in it. I have to finish the sector map and tiles, all the tiles need drilling ready for the flags. Need to make the faction flags too!
Busy busy, updated pics on my blog.

So an update on progress. We kicked off the campaign Friday with the battle for void span point. Each player brought 750 points of their hardest elites and HQ's. it was a packed board! Chaotic but much much fun.
Check out the blog for our campaign map - on the Corvus Sub sector page and other stuff we have created just for this campaign.

So we now have the initial phase campaign map. All the players have staked their claims to phase one planets.
Some games have been fought and the leader board is online too. Marines are winning so far!

Looking good! What did you use for terrain for Voidspan Point?

Hi sorry for the delay in answering. We used 2 halves of a ferrero roche chocolates box, ground coffee tins, pieces of cut ply wood for the walk ways, a home made bastion, a home made skyshield, foam block to stand it all on and a large table covered in black plastic bags!
Check out the campaign map now, the empire is gradually taking it back!
