Hey, I’ve been working on a set for aggregating tournament information that makes it easier for people to find events near them.

It is now in beta and I’m looking for feedback as to what people do / don’t like about it. So I can focus on those items that are worth it.

Right now I’m aggregating from a few sources for which I have permission, but anyone can list any event on the site.

Please look over at http://Tourny.Org and let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Bas

You're competing against RankingsHQ, which is a steep order.

The site is nice and simple. I like the clean look. Watch your spell checking though... 'Upcomming Events'

What is achieved by registering and logging in? And how many people do you expect to do so with the disclaimer on the bottom of the page saying that you'll do whatever you please with their information?

it means I didn't want to spend money on creating a policy that would actually hold water. seemed silly to do that if I didn't even know if people were going to use it. I also didn't know where users would be so I didn't know what laws I'd have to worrie about.

Not sure how ranking compares; I considered going into the direction of rankings but that didn't make sense if I had no users; so I focused on creating value for users first. So that is how the focus came to event aggregation and notifications. If there is interest then I might build out into running tournaments; but I'd likely focus on going more of an organizational route first (registration automation, presubmitting and approving army lists, and pairings) rather than focusing on outcomes.

thanks for the spelling errors, I'll get those fixed.

It's not so much a matter of terms that people will 'like'... they just need to know that any personal information they provide in order to sign up for your site is not going to be spread all over the internet. So just change the 'we'll do whatever we please with it' to a statement that personal information is provided solely for the purposes of identification for registration, and will not be shared with any other party.

And then, obviously, don't share anyone's personal information with anyone else...

I like the map but...

I'd suggest using different icons for different types of tournaments.

The pins are numbered but pins do not aggregate when many are close and the numbers are across the dataset, not just the dataset that is visible on the current zoom level of the map.

Looks promising, I like the idea. I know your concept is tourneys, but it might be nice if it also incorporated a gaming-group or league finder, things that aren't specifically dates in time.

...and as a dev myself, I can just smell .Net MVC all over this thing. You've even got the Metro going

Advanced Terrain: Indestructible, pre-painted 28mm games terrain.
And yes... we are a Hirst Arts licensee!

Looks like a good website, but if I were you I would get a new name and URL. "Tourney" has an 'e' in it and I think people are going to have trouble finding your site via word of mouth, since the site name/URL is misspelled in a way that is nonobvious.

Is that built on MS MVC?

yup, took nerddinners mvc 4 branch and then renamed it to tournaments instead of dinners.

started coding Nov 9, went into public beta Dec 9

It is server 2008 R2, SQLexpress for the users, MongoDB for everything else, written in visual studio 2012.

I got accepted into bizspark so I'll probably migrate to Azure in January.

ended up rewriting nearly everything from nerddinner as I had to rev the map API and started supporting multiple event types.

As far as the domain name; names are hard to get by these days; and well, I don't have a budget; so buying something is rough.

Look on the about page for links to all the bits and bobs I borrowed to put it all together.

I'll look at different icons and some better wording on the privacy. icons will be rough as my artistic skills are lacking.
