I'm still new to 40k, having started here in 6th edition.

I have a starter force with GK and a starter force with Necrons. I've played one game with each force.

While both of these forces are primarily shooty armies, they both seem to be hamstrung a bit by lack of range (outside of a fully dedicated Psyfleman wing). But they are effective 24" shooters and can dominate shooting inside that range.

I like the idea of also expanding into Tau. And their long range, high strength shooting looks tantalizing. Plus I like the visual aesthetics of the Crisis and Broadside suits.

So my question is, which force (GK or Necrons) best synergizes with Tau's long range?

The two things that jump out to me are:
(1)
Tau/GK - GK with a couple squads of Strikes with a Dreadknight. Tau gun line with ADL and Quad Gun. Quad Gun for flyer defense, GK with an "in-your-face" threat, Tau with long range saturation. My worries here are counter assault if something drops right on the Tau and shuts them down.

(2)
Tau/Necron - Necron with 3 or 4 flyers. A bigger blob of warriors with a Veil and Overlord. Maybe a squad of Wraiths. The flyers are both flyer defense and an Anti-Infantry threat in their own right.

What do you think?

Honestly, neither would be that great for Tau. Necrons are just more of the same, and GK cost too much per model to get a solid ally from a small amount of points. (This goes away in higher point games however.)

If I had to choose, I'd say go GK, because Necrons won't give you anything that you don't already have.

Honestly, if you want a good Ally for Tau though, go Orks. They are good at protecting your Tau from CC, bogging down and destroying your Opponent's dedicated CC units, and if they survive they can wreak havoc in your opponent's back field. Nothing Like a mob of 30 slugga boys and a warboss to hold off your opponent's CC.

Between the 2? Grey Knights, Tau majorly lack in close combat and Necrons don't add much in that field, the Gknights on the other hand do.
