This is an idea I have been toying with in my head over the last couple of days and I am in need of some good input from the dakka community. I don’t even know if this is even a good idea but again that is why I have come to you guys for answers.

So the idea is to run a “league of tournaments”. What I mean by this is you would run 1 tournament a month (that is how often my local store does them), for the course of 6 months. That would come out to roughly 18 games over that time. You would get points based on how you did on each game and each tournament (have not figured out how to work the points yet). Just a side note, the monthly tournament would still be just a 3 round tournament with payouts at the end of them.

Here is a list of things that I am having a hard time figuring out as I have never run tournaments.

1. How to do the points in each game/monthly tournament. I have thought of doing something like 15 points for a win, 10 for a tie and 5 for a loss. I would also try to give away points for how you finish in each tournament. I would also have to figure out a way to give out points for a bye.

2. Prizes for the “league of tournaments”. Now I have already said that each months buy in would go to prize support for each month’s tournament. What I am struggling to figure out is how to give away prize support for the winners of the 6 months of play. I have thought about asking the local store to sponsor a trophy and some items to give away (although I do not think they will). Knowing that I would need to come up with a way to get prize support. I am also wondering if a trophy is something people would want or more items. By items I am talking about 40k stuff.

3. That brings me to my next question, should the people that want to participate in the “league of tournaments” have to pay or should it be free to all. Now the only reason to ask people to pay is to be able to get prize support, although charging $5 is not likely to amount to much prize support.

4. Another thing I have been tossing around is whether or not you should have to use the same army for the entire “league of tournaments”. By same army I do not mean the exact same 1500pt army each month, but Necrons, IG or Space Marines.

5. Would the players like to do a team tournament for one of the months? I could see that going either way with the people at the top saying it is unfair to have to rely on someone else to help you win, and players at the bottom saying that the guys at the top of the field will just team up together and beat the middle and the bottom of the field even further down in the points. But I do think that is something to have in like the 3rd or 4th tournament as I think that is part of the 40k game play that is so fun.

6. I know 6 months of tournaments may not sound the best so I have even thought of doing like 4 months or 3 months.

That is about all I can come up with right now. Again I am interested in knowing if you guys would even be interested in something like this or if it is just a waste of time and I shouldn’t even bother bringing it up to my local store. I am looking for all feedback on this and any ideas on how to make this happen or better or if you have done something like this how you went about it.

I look forward to hearing from you guys.

You should take a look at what the Adeptus Windy City group has been doing the past few years. They run an 11-month circuit, after which the top 16 players are invited to play in a final 'best of' event. Each monthly event has a slightly different format and sometimes even a different scoring system.

They charge a small fee for each event ($10-$15 I think) and that money is used to purchase prize support which is randomly raffled off at each monthly event. This stops certain players from dominating the local events and continually claiming a large portion of the prize support - which ultimately is only fun for one person. Additionally, this helps keeps attendance up and gives everyone a fair shot at walking away with something. Your performance at the monthly events earn you points towards the overall rankings, which in turn determine who get an invite to the final event (complete with trophies and all that). I believe only a certain number of your best performances count towards that ranking total, but I might be wrong about that.

That is amazing, someone has already done exactly what i am looking for. They have put in place a good system (atleast from the looks of it). Can any of the Adeptus Windy City players say how they like the setup of this?
