Hey Dakka,

So lately, as several of you must know, I have been battling with the idea of a second Army. My Interest has jumped all over the place but recently set between Tau and IG. However, after much thought, I realized IG would've been too large of a Investment and I have decided to look towards Necrons.

I like the models, and dig their new Fluff. My only concern is that they aren't going to hold my interest on the table. I do not like static gunlines, and Versatility is a must in armies for me.

Are Necrons fun to play? Do they have enough builds/playstyles to keep me captivated?

Help me out Dakka!

Off the top of my head, there are several builds of Necrons that work at a competitive level. The most powerful lists are Flying Circus, Wraithwing, and Silver Tide. Flying Circus is all about playing the Air Superiority game, using Night and Doom Scythes to take control of the air by eliminating enemy fliers and AA, and then turning their guns on your opponents. They are often filled with minimum size warrior squads, with some resilient units deployed out of LOS in hopes that they survive until the air cav shows up. Wraithwing is built around large squads of Wraiths. They are usually taken in squads of 6, 3 with whipcoils, 3 without, and aim to get into CC. I'm not sure what else goes in the list, but I'm sure others can point you in the right direction. Silver Tide is the relentless horde approach for Necrons. You take maxed out squads of warriors with Ghost Arks and Res-Lords for support, using support pieces such as the Triarch Stalker, Royal Courts, and Annihilation Barges. It's a touch slow, but its good against anything that doesn't have a high toughness value.

There are also several less powerful builds that are still viable, such as Scarab Farm (basically spamming Scarabs and Spyders). All in all, however, the codex has amazing balance. While some choices are at the top of the pile (Wraiths, Annihilation Barges) and some are clearly at the bottom (Flayed Ones, Monoliths, and both Cryptek Special Characters), really almost every unit in the codex is viable if you have the right pieces to support it (while Annihilation Barges are the 'best' Heavy Support choice, whether or not they are the right choice depends entirely on your list. Scarab Farm takes Spyders, Flying Circus takes Doom Scythes, and I've even seen more specialized lists that really benefited from monoliths). Just avoid Flayed Ones. They are on a completely different level than the rest of the codex (Which is surprising considering that they want to charge us 50 dollars for 5 of the things now).
