What are you doing with the magnets? Arms, weapons, what?

I have been going magnet crazy for the last few months. What I have found is...
For plastic SM arms and banners use 1x2mm. You can even double them up in the torso for some extra strength.
For plastic Terminators you can actually fit 1x5mm magnets in.
I get my magnets from http://www.hfminis.co.uk/
Hope this helps,
cheers Vim

I worked it out myself when i first got rare earth magnets simply by measuring my models and choosing which i thought was best for a beginner (myself).
I would suggest buying them from ebay, quick response and you get quite a large amount for not too much $$.

Grade N42 is pretty much standard. If a part is particularly heavy, it usually means you can fit a sufficiently large magnet or use a supplemental pin. The main reason magnetic joints fail is torque causing the parts to sag or rotate - insufficient friction, not pull strength, is the main issue. A larger magnet of comparable strength does more for that than a magnet with marginally stronger pull (grade N52), but the same surface area, in my (relatively limited) experience.

If you have enough pull to stop the parts coming apart but rotation or saggin is a problem, consider just drilling a small hole next to the magnet and pinning the parts in to position. You just glue the pin in to one side and use it to locate the joint at the correct rotation in the other side, and the pin will prevent rotation.

I've experimented with magnets too. I've had success on most cases. I use rare earth magnets 3.2mm x 1.6mm. The main thing I've come across is that when drilling into an arm is that you want it to be flush with the torso that its to go into. To get it right its really a hit and miss depending on the model your working on. It mainly takes practice and patience. Arms are pretty straight forward to do. Legs and torsos' are a little tougher to get down for me. I've done two magnetized tech marines, a chaos rhino/predator, and the arms for my wifes chaos warlord. It depends on the project of what your trying to accomplish. Another thing is the material that your doing it to. Peter is harder to work with, plastic is easier but if your hole isn't deep enough and your magnet too strong it has a tendency of being pulled out. I've managed to minimize that by spreading a thin coat of liquid green stuff on the magnet after its been set into place. Use this in case you have any more questions.

Use a pin vise (and drill) to drill into plastic. A Dremel spins too fast and will melt the plastic as it goes. It's also a lot harder to control a power tool while doing tiny detail work, which is what you're basically doing.

For plastic and finecast. I use 2mm and 1mm drill bits in the GW pin vice. For larger sizes I just turn the bit with my hand.

I use a GW pin vice to drill small holes in plastic and finecast. For metal and larger holes in plastic I use an electric power drill, but I make a small indent with the pin vice first (so when using the power drill the bit has something to bite on instead of wiggling around and inevitably going in to the wrong place). I typically wedge either the part somewhere or wedge the drill between my legs so it's easier to control, never bothered with an actual vice to hold the model.

I use the GW pin vice myself. You can fit 1mm in one end and 2-3mm in the other. Very useful

D21 and d101 from k&j magnets. A drill tool is really not that big of a deal, you just have to work it in and out so that you do not heat the target area to much. I have done a lot of magnet work with my old SM army back in the day as well as all my magnet work for my IG, tanks etc.
Just match you magnet to your bit and your set. I personally found the drill type bits with flat tips to work the best. Drill part of the hole out with a tip bit and then return and drill out with a flat bit so that it matches your magnet. If the whole is to small, you can work it around the sides to increase the space. The flat tip bit allows you to keep the inside smoth as well as flap with out deepining the hole.
