Hi guys,

I’v come to the conclusion that I’m needing something ‘fast attack’ for my elder army.I have had allot of success with my army, but as it relatively heavy and slow I usually take punishment from long ranged shooting so something to distract my opponent would be nice I was thinking either hawks or spiders. I specifically want them deep striking and getting behind the enemy lines to cause disruption. What do you guys think of swooping hawks v.s warp spiders in 6th ed? It seems the hawks are what I’m looking for but I always like to get a second opinion.

thanks :-)

Well without knowing your list/meta I'm gonna go with warpspiders, they are faster, have more firepower and are harder to kill + they can shot and spread out after deepstriking. Generally there's only two real reasons to take Hawks over Spiders.

1. You need an extra source of anti landraider (getting rear shots isn't to hard with spiders)

2. you want linebreaker, and don't have anything else that could easily get it.

There are other reasons to take them but they are frankly very very specialized reasons. (and the listed ones aren't that good anyhow)

Warp spiders are pretty darn good in today's meta.

The 3+ save means they are resistant to a lot of shooting. They can move quite quickly with their warp generators. The amount of STR 6 torrent fire they can put out is quite significant.

In comparison, hawks carry glorified flashlights, and when they deep strike they can drop a template that will annoy your opponent.

Now, IMHO the hawks look cooler, so if your going for a nice looking army, hawks all the way.

There is hardly any point discussing this, Spiders are relatively solid units; they can torrent down pretty much any infantry unit with S6 shooting, can mess up vehicles with the new glancing rules, are highly mobile and relatively durable. Hawks on the other hand are terrible, they have basically no damage output from shooting, can only hurt vehicles if someone is silly enough to let them get a charge off, and are much easiler to kill with only a 4+ save.
