Ok, a friend of mine is getting into Flames of war and wanted some help working out a list, after a bit of discussion, a couple of things came out

1)had to be Polish (like him)

2)Shermans - his grandfather drove one

3)Attack and defense were options.

I looked at the Polish sherman list and was a little underwhelmed, I find that basic shermans when trained have a tendency to just die.
So after a bit of thinking, I've thought about going for the infantry list, and having it so that it can defend, but also attack at night.

So the list comprises

HQ

3 Full infantry platoons

Anti tank platoon (2 sections)

Carrier recon (1 section)

2 sherman platoons (both 3 normal and one firefly)

Field Battery (4 guns)

Medium artillery (4 guns)

Now on defense you have a lot of smoke to stop the enemy targeting you at range (shermans/artillery)

with the anti tank platoon and shermans able to help the infantry when dug in on objectives.

On offense, firstly It'll be at night and all the infantry and recon will get an extra move.

But assuming the opposition has reserves, the mixture of artillery and the wonderful british rules will mean that the opposition should be nice and soft for the infantry when they hit.

Any thoughts?

HI.
Am only a new(ish) player , but here are some thoughts and ideas...

A)Don't forget British and Comonwealth Shermans can fire smoke.

B) Most infantry lists I see run 4 HMG ,(Attached to combat platoons.)And 6 x 3" mortars or 4 X 4,2" mortars. For help with enemy massed infantry, and cheap HE and Smoke support.

C) I think an AA section or Priority Typhoon is a good idea to counter enemy air attacks.

D) 6pdr AT guns are great for supporting fast moving attacks .(Motor platoons.)But 17 pdr s seem to work better with normal infantry .Sniping enemy armour at range.

E )I am not too sure on artillery , But 8 x 25 pdrs might be a better choice than 4 x 25p pdrs and 4 x 5.5 ".(More options on area of effect, and fire density, and get 8 gun battery rules.)

F) Any armoured platoons under a bombardment uses its top armour value.(Normaly 1 or 2) .So 25pdr bombardments are quite effective as an anti tank element...

If I have got anything wrong I am sure more experianced players will correct me.

Sadly Brit HMG's don't have ability to combat attach, I'm also less keen on the mortars as both the artillery can smoke, and attacking at night gives almost the same benefits.

My group try to play blue on red so most axis air support is limited, but yeah it's a weakness

One of the advantages of v3 is that you no longer need 8 guns for mike target etc, 4 guns work fine and you can still combine fire if needed - but hey 5'5'' with re-rolling saves should

But thanks for your ideas!

Sorry about the artillery oversight, we re still getting to grips with V3.

I only mentioned HMG and mortar units as they can give cheap access to bombardments and smoke.
(If points are tight.)But if you like the idea of lots of arty instead fair enough.

I like using SP AA units as they are very effective vs enemy infantry/light vehicle units.
Running without anything to counter enemy aircraft could cause you some problems if they get lucky rolls. (Or you play blue on blue, Priority Typhoons unopposed can wreak havok!)
