ok, so I've been playing Eldar for awhile and have recently taken an interest in Tau. I'm yet to buy anything, I'd rather ask around first for the best army I could muster (by best I mean fun and competetive). I want a shooty army, like the ones that have stuffed me up so many times. what are your suggestions? any help would be much appreciated

Try a mech army w/ 4 crisis suits, and allie them w/ your eldar, because they work REALLY well together.
or just spam crisis suits

Here is my list, not saying its good but the basic structure is good, by the way, my crisis suits aren't good for a beginner(I'm one, so I dont know why I made the like that) Try deathrains instead

SS=sensor spines
SM=Seeker missiles
HW=Hard wired
DP=Disruption pod
FD=flachette discharger

Crisis Shas'o w/ fusion(melta) and plasma rifle, multitracker HW BSF, HW DC, one shield drone
3 Crisis w/ team leader, same load out but last 3 only on team leader (assimilate platoon as bodygaurds in allied detachment)
12 firewarriors, team leader w/ blacksun, emp grenades(dont use these, I use them to annoy/throw off opponents)
Devilfish w/ SS, SM, DP, FD
Firewarriors, same(I get rid of this when they are allies)
Devilfish, same(i get rid of this when they are allies)
3 Tetras w/ SS, target lock.
5 Pihranas w/ disruption pods and seeker missiles!(gets rid of in allied detachment)
Hammerhead w/ smart missile system, Sensor spines, Multitracker, Railgun, Seeker missile,flachette discharger and disruption pods
Another of said hammerhead(get rid of in allied detachment)

and 40k was like McDonalds - you could get it anywhere - it wouldn't necessarily satisfy, but it was probably better than nothing.
