Having gotten The Hobbit SBG rulebook for Christmas and The Fallen Realms for New Years, I've hammered out a few lists that I hope are both fluffy and effective. Any comments and criticisms are welcome (and remember I've only played this game once before, back when The Fellowship of The Ring first came out in theaters )
The Golden Army of Abrakhân (Infantry) - 750 pts Haradrim Force

Warband One

The Golden King of Abrakhân @ 115 pts

5 Abrakhân Merchant Guard @ 40 pts

Warband Two

Hâsharin @ 90 pts

Warband Three

Haradrim Chieftain @ 46 pts
* Spear
11 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 88 pts
* Spears

Warband Four

Haradrim Chieftain @ 46 pts
* Spear
11 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 88 pts
* Spears

Warband Five

* Bow

8 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 64 pts
* Bows

Warband Six

Haradrim Chieftain @ 50 pts
* Bow

8 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 64 pts
* Bows

GRAND TOTAL: 749 pts

A full infantry force for close quarters. Lacks any mobility in the open field.

The Golden Army of Abrakhân (Mixed) - 750 pts Haradrim Force

The Golden King of Abrakhân @ 115 pts

6 Abrakhân Merchant Guard @ 48 pts

* Horse, War Spear

6 Abrakhân Raiders @ 78 pts
* War Spears

Warband Three

Haradrim Chieftain @ 46 pts

8 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 64 pts

Warband Four

* Spears

Warband Five

Haradrim Chieftain @ 50 pts
* Bow

8 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 64 pts
* Bows

Warband Six

Haradrim Chieftain @ 50 pts
* Bow

8 Warriors of Abrakhân @ 64 pts
* Bows

GRAND TOTAL: 749 pts

The small cavalry unit gives this force some mobility in the open, but lacks the hero-hunting Hâsharin.

Haradrim Cavalry - 750 pts Haradrim Force

The Betrayer @ 135 pts
* Armoured Horse

6 Haradrim Raiders @ 97 pts
* Bows, Banner

More of an attempt to see what I could fit in a mostly cavalry force and to also fit the Betrayer in a force...

Third list. An entirely cavalry Harad list is something that is not very effective. A blend of cavalry and infantry I find is always good, unless you play Rohan.

Maybe drop the Betrayer in favour of more Haradrim warriors.

Wasn't really serious with the third list, more of an exercise just to see what I could put togethger using mainly cavalry and the Betrayer.

So from your comments, would you recommend the second list over the first?

Whoops, sorry, needed to look at the lists order a bit better

Yes, definitely the second list.

It's mobile and horde-y enough to be extremely effective in a game.

I picked up the Free Peoples book over the weekend. Here is the force that I came up with. Hopefully everything is legal.

The Defence of Erebor - 750 pts Durin's Folk Force

Warband One

Dain Ironfoot, King of Erebor @ 125 pts

6 Khazâd Guard @ 66 pts

Warband Two

Dwarf Captain @ 65 pts
* Shield

7 Dwarf Warriors @ 63 pts
* 4 Shields, 3 Two-handed Weapons

5 Dwarf Rangers @ 50 pts
* Dwarf Longbows

Warband Three

Dwarf Captain @ 65 pts
* Shield

7 Dwarf Warriors @ 63 pts
* 4 Shields, 3 Two-handed Weapons

5 Dwarf Rangers @ 50 pts
* Dwarf Longbows

Allied Warband One

Grim Hammer Captain @ 70 pts

12 Grim Hammer Warriors @ 132 pts

GRAND TOTAL: 749 pts

So which list looks better, the Haradrim or the dwarves?

Well, it depends on your playstyle.

What armies do you have that aren't LOTR?

The Dwarves have an especially high defence - you won't be moving around too much lest the shield wall is broken. They're fairly slow as well. If you're going to go with Dwarves, I may drop a few rangers in favour of some Vault Warden teams.

The Haradrim are more of a horde army, a better Orc army than Orcs! The second list (the one I'd assume you'd be going with) is actually quite good - lots of men on the ground.

If you played the Haradrim against the Dwarves, it would probably be quite a close fight, but I'd say that the Haradrim are better - all it takes for the Dwarves are Vault Warden teams!

The 40K army I'm working on is Necrons, but my work schedule plus not much of a community in my city until recently means I haven't played much since late third, early fourth edition where I played Speed Freeks.

I did look at the rules for the Vault Warden team, but nothing really stood out to my untrained eye. Also the background (do they use Vault Warden teams in the great outdoors) plus the price ($16.50 per team) made me shy away from them.

FWIW, the only army that I definitely know I would be facing is the store owner's Uruk hai.

Then definitely go with Dwarves. Against Uruks, you need high defence because they can phalanx you to death in three ranks. You don't need numbers.

Hope that helped.
