Personally I don't think the Doom Scythe is hardly ever worth taking, mainly because Night Scythes are so much better(unless I was gonna cheese out and do a flying circus). The Monolith on the other hand serves a few purposes that nothing else in the codex does. I don't care how many people claim the Monolith is a point sink, it has always performed to my expectations when I have fielded it and that is it's true value. My simplified reasons would be...
1. It is a bullet Magnet. Most people I play against fire everything they've got at it the first turn, and if they are shooting at the Monolith they are not shooting at the rest of my army.
2. When Night Scythes go bad. Ever have a unit in a Night Scythe get shot down before they get to deploy? The Monolith can get those guys back in the fight better than any other unit can.
3. Mobile cover. If you are using Wraiths as a counter assault unit, your enemy can't shoot at them as they move forward if they can't see them.
4. Cool Factor, nuff said.
All in all I rate the Monolith higher for the utility, not it's ability to make it's points back.
