"Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in!" - Michael Corleone, The Godfather Part III

Oh dakkadakka, how I've missed you! I used to play 40k back in the days of 2nd and 3rd edition, but I sadly had to give it up just a bit into 4th. Happily, new life events have brought me back to 40k, and this of course means I had to return to dakkadakka to learn some newfangled tactics for my budding armies.

Anyways, enough nostalgia, on to the questions! I've started putting together a Space Wolf army that, at the moment, mostly consists of several Grey Hunters and Long Fangs, mostly on foot. I'm rather keen to try and fit some Terminators in, as I mostly played xenos back in the day and I envied the hell out of the +2/+5 buggers. So I'm wondering the best way to fit them into my army considering they're pretty much on foot and like to shoot things. The Land Raider option is right out - seems like a big waste of points, not to mention $$ - which leaves me with !) footslogging them, 2) drop podding them, 3) attaching them as leaders to the Hunters, or 4) some combination of these. What do you guys feel is the best way to use the brutes?

The other thing I was wondering about was Allies, are they a good idea or a waste? IG and BA jump out to me as great options, though most of the ways I think of for IG seem really cheesy (1-3 flyers, 1-3 russes, and/or just a pile of infantry). On the other hand, something as simple as a BA Librarian and a couple of Assault Squads seems like an interesting and flexible option, especially on objectives missions.

Please feel free to way in on any and all of this, I welcome all knowledge and suggestions. I have faith that the dakkadakka community is as helpful today as I remember it being some 7 years ago.

First of all welcome back to the wonderful world of 40k!

I personally find the best way of delivering WG termis is via DP. Load em up and drop 'em down with combi to pop some high value targets.

They are also wonderful as squad leaders to the grey hunters and make the already amazingly well rounded troops even more survivable.

I would say get a couple boxes of them and that way you have the option of doing both and also they are easy to use for lone wolf models. Most deffinatly magnetize the arms to these buggers though because I always find myself switching and one game wanting just basic power weapons then next wanting a PF or CF

When you quotes the Godfather part 3, I was disgusted and stopped reading.

SW terminators can get costly fast, I'd stick with more GHs, LFs and RPs. Can't go wrong with them really.

IG make GREAT allies. Vendetta, blob with your RP in side to buff them with Prescience divination power and loaded up on LCs and PGs. Your opponent won't know what hit them!
You can chuck a manticore in there too for str:10 awesomeness, or a Demolisher to spear head your GH advance.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

Experimentation has born out that they're bad, but I love fielding a 10 man unit of Wolf Guard Terminators with a Wolf Lord to answer challenges and a Rune Priest to buff the unit, but it's too much fun to jam into the middle of the field.

The more efficient use is probably as leaders for 8 man squads of Grey Hunters in drop pods, equipped with TDA, a power axe, and a combiweapon that matches the squad special weapon. However, the changes to Rallying have made not being able to Sweeping Advance into a liability rather than a benefit.

I tried 5 man squads of TDAWGs and wasn't impressed. The 10 man squad is so much more resilient and is large enough that avoiding getting assault by it is a problem for other footslogging armies.

I have good news and bad news for you...

The good news:
Space Wolves are a top-tier codex, and that tier is well above the riff-raff. Sometimes unfairly so. Grey Hunters are widely considered to be one of the most undercosted units in the game, and probably the single best troop unit in any codex. Further, Long Fangs with missile launchers have been the cheesy staple of Spave Wolves for a long time now, as they are stupid-cheap for the hurt they can put on things. you can easily make a list with 3x units of Long Fangs, 2x Rune Priests and nothing by Grey Hunters and you will be extremely competitive. In fact, if you splash in some Razorbacks into that, you've got the recipe for the often-reviled 'Netlist.

The bad news:
There is no reason to take allies if you are playing Space Wolves, as the Space Wolves have no need for outside support. They can do almost everything on their own, and they are great at it. So really, there is no bad news if you play Space Wolves.

Except of course they have absolutely no anti-air, and no long range scoring units. SW benefit from guard a lot. You can have a blob with LCs sit on an objective while the GHs move forward or drop-pod (because rhinos don't last long enough to be there for a dash back to the home objective) and Vendettas to ensure your enemy's aircraft is threatened reliably.

I said almost everything. Flyers are the one weakness, and I'm sure that will all change in the next Errata.

Fair enough, although I hope they don't reprice ML too. 25pts for a ML with Flak just isn't worth it.

They'll likely never re-price things in an errata. I don't even think there's a precedent for that. But I really would not be surprised to learn that missile launchers gain the ability to shoot Flak as a third option.

That would be awesome, but I doubt it'd happen. Oh the tears that would come from chaos and DA players when they have to pay 25pts for a Flak and SW only 10.
