How would I go on about making something similar to http://www.fieldsofglorymodels.co.uk/Vallejo-26219-Stone-Textures-Brown-Earth-200ml ?

I had a go at it, but it did not look like mud, more like lightly sanded base.

I remember seeing a tutorial for a mud based flying base, which looked awesome, but rather time consuming for smaller base,
Any tips on how I can make realistic mud bases? My materials are limited, but I'm willing to get whats needed. I just thought the Brown earth would be a quick way
