I'm new here and new to warhammer 40K. I've gotten a big interest in the necrons and wanted to start me a nice little army. My question is tough can you basically paint them in whatever colors you want?or do you need to follow the colors stated in the books? I find the traditional silver quite... meh...

Do 'em however you want. Mine are pearlescent blue with purple metallic shoulders and white heads

Go nuts! My personal favorite was a gold/brass necron army with red as the "power" color. Looked very sharp.
