Hey all,

I was going to add some more possible deployment setups and objectives to my skirmish game Dinosaur Cowboys.

One brain can only think of so many, so I thought I'd post here for more ideas!

Basically Deployments would be where each posse sets up (up to 5 figures plus 1 dinosaur per side). I'd like to make them "table generic" in the sense that you can play on a 4x4 table or an 8x8 table and still have the deployment method be fun and balanced. Another facet to keep in mind is the number of players, which is normally 2 but might be more. The deployments can also have special terrain features or small additional rules (such as being setup in a town, or having some figures show up later based on a roll).
Some example ideas: Plain old opposite table edges, one group in the middle surrounded by the opponent, opposite corners, random table edges, opposite table edges but with deep deployed scouts/point man, long line (caravan style) surrounded by opponent, massive river in the middle, start unarmed in a saloon for a brawl, deploy in tunnels/mines below the surface, etc.

And Objectives are fairly self explanatory. I'm thinking of allowing the players to choose to do a "public" objective (the same objective known to both players) or "private" objectives (rolled/handed out on cards before the battle, secret, different between players). Ideally the secret objectives could work as public objectives, so you basically choose which mode (public/private) you want and then go off a single objective list, instead of having separate lists for each.
Some examples: Assassination (kill enemy Leader), Escort, Ambush, Dinosaur Egg Hunt, Capture Point, Plant Bomb, etc.

General ideas are great and specific implementations are even better (depending on if you know the rules or want to learn them). Really I just want to get a brainstorm going and I figured this was generic enough to apply to many other games.

Well so much for any uptake on that. I always forget Misc Miniature Games gets almost no traffic

Anyway I ended up figuring out 10 different deployments and 11 objectives, so I'm happy with that so far. Plus the idea of "Features", which are basically special rules specific to that game. For example spike traps, an erupting volcano, stampeding herds, off board cannon fire, carnivorous plants, etc. Just fun and thematic stuff that spices up a game but doesn't affect deployment or the objectives.

So the deployments are: Edge, Random Edge, Deep Edge, Corner, Deep Corner, Quadrant, Line, Center, Scatter, Clever Girl

And the objectives are: Shoot Out, Quick Draw, Assassinate, Strike Fear, Capture, Smash and Grab, Defend, Flank, Escort, Guard, Demolish

If anyone is interested in seeing the details I posted my formatted rules for these here: http://dinosaurcowboys.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/preview-of-upcoming-v1-4-rules/

We get a fair amount of traffic under the circumstances. And we make up for a lack of quantity with a superior quality!

I've been quietly following your work on Dinosaur Cowboys since the first tentative battle reports. In principle, I love what I've seen, and I'm dying for some SF cowboy action (but think Wild West Exodus looks silly beyond words). I just don't have room for another game in my schedule right now.

Glad to know there are some silent fans out there

I know how it can be to fit in another game. You could always try a one-off game some afternoon. I just made a bunch of basic starter posses too so you wouldn't even have to build one from scratch, just choose what you like. That tends to be a stumbling block for a lot of people from what I've seen.

I haven't even heard of Wild West Exodus, so I'll have to take a look. In such a limited genre as this any new source is normally exciting.
