Does anyone find it odd that now, with the 6th edition rules, Hormogaunts that are out of synapse get Rage which makes them better... so you want them out of synapse. Anyhow, in the codex entry for Hormogaunts it even says that they are "left to their own devices", meaning the hive mind leaves them to do their thing.

Weren't gaunts one of the few if not only nid form that can breed? It kind of makes sense that unless they're told what to do they amount to little more than velociraptors.

Remember that you take a big risk having them outside of synapse. If they lost combat (which, even with weight of attacks behind them, is possible), they are no longer Fearless. With Ld7, chances of them running is high. If you don't have a safety net Synapse unit behind them, it can go bad for you.

But yes, Rage changing basically gave Feed a straight up buff being outside of Synapse with no drawbacks, unlike Lurk units which still have a drawback. It's just not always the best idea to utilise Rage. A lot of the time, being Fearless is what you really want.

They breed asexually, when they are born. Basically, a mycetic spore lands, unloads its Hormagaunts, and they lay eggs, then run off and die. The eggs hatch, that wave lays its own eggs, and runs off to die. It basically creates a perpetually recycling set of waves of Hormagaunts for exhausting ammo. Of course, it completely sidesteps major issues with the idea, like needing to eat to provide the eggs with nutrients. But 40k fluff never really considers such insignificant things.

To the best of my knowledge, although you're right about the asexual reproduction, there's nothing written down as to exactly when in their life cycle they lay their eggs. Perhaps the act of feeding stimulates a mass of egg production?
