So I've asked alot of people and apparently eldar are the best allies for tau, seeing as they are battle brothers and eldar have good psykers where as tau have none lol. I've been wondering though, what would be the best eldar units to use in a tau gunline army? I was thinking a farseer, maybe with a seer council or eldrad ulthan plus dire avengers or pathfinders as troops, either striking scorpions or howling banshees as elites, swooping hawks as fast attack and a wraithlord for heavy support?
If you can afford to dump a heap of points into the Eldar component, then a Jetcouncil works very well in a Tau list. Jetcouncils are highly mobile and highly durable, but their damage output isn't amazing. However this is fine in a Tau list since they can stand in front of all your guns and tarpit half your opponents army while you shoot the rest of it to death.
More realistically though usually you won't be dumping 500+ points into allies. Obviously you want a Farseer with Warding (possibly Eldrad if you have the points). For troops imo the best thing to bring are small units of Jetbikes. I have seen quite a few people talk up Tau as being pretty solid in 6th, but they still have a serious weakness in that their troops are very fragile, which combined with limited mobility means they don't have any reliable ways of getting objectives that aren't on their side of the board. Jetbikes fill this role nicely. If you want a safe place for your Seer to sit then you can take Pathfinders, but imo its really not worth it when Tau already have scoring units that want to be sitting back anyway. Since you can join with Tau units anyway imo Pathfinders aren't really needed in this case.
The only Elites choices you might bring are Fire Dragons and possibly Harlies. Dragons give you a nice troubleshooting unit which can just remove one vehicle or MC before they die (assuming you can get them into range), or you can run them on a Quad Gun. Harlies fill a similar role to the Jetcouncil, but imo aren't worth considering with Tau as primary since you won't get any kind of character with them to absorb wounds. There is nothing in the Fast Attack slot that you would want, Hawks and Shining Spears are one of the worst units in the codex, Vypers are too fragile and Warp Spiders are just inferior Stealth Suits.
The heavy slot is probably the most interesting one for this combo. Imo the two best choices are Scatter Laser War Walkers and Dark Reapers. Which one you take is largely dependent on what you have in your Tau list. If you are running heaps of Missile Pod Suits then Reapers work nicely because they can just remove any MEQ unit which ends up in the open. If you have plenty of Plasma and Fusion on your Suits then the torrent from the Walkers fits in nicely.
Thanks for the advice powerguy, I'll probably get some fire dragons as my opponents are heavy on the tanks and the 2+ saves and zane, do you mean a 3 man squad of war walkers or support platforms?
