So, Chess. Who plays? I used to play competitively in school tournaments in elementary school, and I'm recently getting back into the swing of things; experimenting with openings, studying tactics, and playing lots of online chess before I hit up a proper tournament in a few weeks. I'll probably lose all my games, but that's learning Anyone else playing or looking to play on a competitive level? I'd like for this to just be a general discussion thread, so I don't really have any specific OP questions.

I'm terrible, but had a lot of fun in the late 80s with Battlechess.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

I've never played competitively, but I enjoy sitting down for the occasional game. My wife just got me this for my birthday this past weekend. http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Kingdoms-Chess-Set-853373

I am the one you warned me of

I think the white army is completely cheese. I mean, always going first? Broken!

I'm also a casual player.

White chessmen, black chessmen -- I've even seen red ones. It seems like every release is just more chessmen and I think it's about time we had some Xenos releases.

Wait.

I suck at chess, but enjoy it anyway.

Used to play quite a bit (not competitively), and like to feel I could hold my own. At least, I could hold my own against my friends. We also tended to play quicker, so there wasn't a ton of deep strategy.

I played for awhile at work at lunch with a workmate who played.

I also have done PBEM, which is also fun, but can take awhile depending on how long move emails take (and no cheating!).

I found that the only way to get better was play, play, play. I studied middle, and particularly end game strategy, but could never get it to stick (end game is usually where I lose it), probably because I didn't play enough.
