As a new player, whose previous knowledge of Space Marines was only based around what I learned about the Blood Ravens in Dawn of War, I was doing some looking into chapters. I'm currently fielding an army painted up as Dark Angels, made from the Dark Angels Veterans kit, the Scout Sniper kit, the Assault on Black Reach set and Dark Vengeance Limited Edition set. However, after looking through other chapters I found myself also liking the appearance of the Black Templar, especially the BT chapter upgrade frame and Emperor's Champion kits, but I also like the appearance of the Dark Angels.

So I'm looking at two possibilities that I can see right now:
1. Field Black Templars as allies for my Dark Angel's force.
2. Create a custom chapter whose visual aesthetic takes from both the Dark Angels and Black Templar.

I'm new to the hobby so I'm not entirely sure which would be the better option, so I was wondering if more veteran players can give me a hand.

Both sound like viable ideas. The two are similar enough visually (robes / tabards, fragrance sensers, sword emblems) for them to look great as allies and for mix-matching between the kits to work.

No.2 will also allow you to swap between the two Codex's (as in, use a different Codex each game) for different builds.

Rumour mill also suggests a new BT Codex on the horizon.

I'll wait for the new codex then. Thanks for the help.

"New codex on the horizon" can mean that they've talked about it, but it might still be 2 years until it comes out.

I expect there will be a white dwarf "update" as a temporary fix, with a full codex maybe sometime next year. BT is currently the oldest codex.

But Find the codex you like and play with it. don't wait for a new codex our you might not get to the army you really want to play.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

If you play Dark Angels, expect to be one of the millions. If you play BT, expect to stand out. And then should get a major buff next month when we get the Stormraven.

I've decided to come up with my own chapter, that way I can switch between the DA codex and BT codex, since those are the only Space Marine codexes that call out to me.

Name: Knights Exemplar
Founding Chapter: Unknown.
Founding: Unknown, rumored to be the the ill fated 21st Founding.
Chapter Symbol: A Crimson Sword
Chapter Colors: Leadbelcher with Ulthuan Grey Shoulders and Mephiston Red Helmets.
Combat Specialty: Close-Quarters Combat and Tyranid Extermination.

Important Notes: The Chapter operates as a Fleet Chapter, their home sector lost to Tyranids, a war that was eventually won at the cost of the sector and the lose of the majority of the chapter's records, their current records only date back to M39, where their records showed that the chapter began it's zealous purge of Tyranids in every sector it's fleet arrived in.

Special Notes: Often wear black cloaks, hoods are robes. Members of the Knights Exemplar are known for taking Vows of Silence, for what purpose is only known within the chapter.

EDIT:
By close-quarters combat, this refers to the fact that the chapter is specially trained in fighting in areas with limited maneuverability, such as Tyranid or Ork infested Space Hulks.
