I've been doing my own custom Chapter and I never use to use foundation paints for them, I'd give them a chaos black undercoating, then paint them the old midnight blue Citadel colour.

My question is this.. Is it worth me using a blue foundation paint as midnight blue is already a really dark blue or should I not bother with foundation as necron abyss foundation is pretty much the same shade as midnight blue?

Wow, you have some old OOP paints there.
Foundation paints are out of production for almost a year now, Midnight Blue maybe 5 years.

If you're not sticking with Midnight Blue then you might as well pick the closest of the current range, from what I can tell that'd be Kantor Blue (base). Alternatively you could poke around other paint ranges, Vallejo has Night Blue which would probably be closer than Kantor Blue.

@Kroothawk: Well I say I use Midnight Blue, that was the original colour I used I still had the old screw top pot which I was surprised hadn't dried up lol, I stopped painting for a long while.. How come they stopped Foundations? I know people that rant about how useful they are..

@Johnno: I do have Vallejo Game Color paints now, I've actually got the Night Blue.

So you think it's not worth using Foundation then as it's virtually the same colour as the Night Blue I'm using for my colour scheme?

I wouldn't bother with them from the simple standpoint of them being out of production. If you want an out of production paint then start hunting down Midnight Blue, otherwise I'd just say stick with Night Blue. Or if you want to swap to GW, then go for Kantor Blue. On top of becoming hard to find I personally don't feel that foundation paints are any better than regular acrylics, some are even worse because they smell awful.

Fair enough, I do like the Night Blue it's a nice thickness as it is and it's a bit cheaper then Citadel as well.

GW is weird like that, the foundation paints are now called "bases." They're basically the same, but either slightly off-colour or totally off-colour from the old ones and renamed.

You could also buy Cote D'arms paint, as they used to make GW's paint before they started Citadel. They still produce many of the old, old paints you might have, like Midnight Blue.
