Wondering Why the Emperor Left

United Kingdom

First off, I have around 1500 points of Chaos Space Marines with 500 points of Daemon Allies. I've been playing Chaos for a few years and even more so with the new Codex, I want to get into another army but it seems..I don't really like any of them! I just play my friend casually around once a week so I don't want to spend loads of money into an army straight from the start. I want a new army but:
- Neither of us like Grey Knights (as a codex)
- I've played Marines and don't really want another Marine army unless its REALLY different play style.
- He plays Marines, Orks, Tau and Nids so I don't want an army that he has.
- I hardly ever paint.
- More models and fluff than actual power.

The question is what army is for me?

Umm. So that leaves:
- Imperial Guard
- Sisters of Battle
- Eldar
- Dark Eldar

Scrap Sisters, they are eating cash for the Emperor.
Guards would be a lot of painting, though they are awesome, but that would leave the Eldar and Dark Eldar for you.

I would advise to continue with your current army until the new Eldar codex drops.

Dark Eldar have some really nice models, and if you like chaos, well dark eldar are about as chaotic a race as any other.

They survive on torture and torment.

Or if you wanted a different play style of marines, go black templar. no psykers, no strict tac squads, charge when someone gets shot.

What about Necrons? They're probably the easiest army to paint. Just metallic basecoat, some ink and dots of paint for eyes and they look decent.

I'd start now while Eldar are dirt cheap. I've been picking up Tau and Eldar as cheap as free. When the codex drops the deals will disappear.

Or try a small faction from another game on the side? Infinity, malifaux, warmachine, warpath, dust, etc...you have other choices. Maybe you guys will find factions in one of those that you like.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Eldar sounds like the army for you then, great army to play. And very good lore too

Necrons are lots of fun, but play similar to Marine armies IMO.

Have you thought about adding an allied detachment to your CSM army? Instead of buying a brand new army, you could do something like get a few squads of Imperial Guard and tanks to supplement the CSM, eventually moving onto maybe the CSM being the IG allies.
(Or replace IG with another army, your disgression)

Extra consideration for you would be to look at the forces available through the Forge World books. Granted they'll mostly be Marines, though if you're just playing friendly games I don't imagine you'll encounter any problems with using the FW rules, and you can sub the FW models for regular GW ones for 99% of the stuff you'd be using anyway.

Take a step back and tell us what your ideals are, wish list everything here, no matter how ludicrous it may seem, be it in game play style or force background, maybe we can find something for you that way

Id put a vote in for Guard... realy go to town on Chaosifying them up.

Best case scenario a new chaos themed army
worst case scenario, you dont like them and its a few squads of cultists/allies for your current army.

I'd suggest Imperial Guard using Mantic's Corporation infantry, combined with GW's plastic tanks.

Of course, purchased from your webstore of choice...

Yeah, you could totally do an IG army and have them be Heretics allied to your main army.

If you really want something different from marines, then dark eldar. Completely different play style; but still "evil".

You could always expand your daemon force. You already have a solid starting point, so it would be easy enough. Also the play style of daemons on their own is much different from chaos with a few daemon buddies.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

wowowowo, on ebay you can pick up a squad of 10 for roughly the same as a normal marine box set D: I know my sistersarmy cost a hell of a lot less then it would have from GW as it's all from ebay

I'd say they're pretty damn fun to play and go can go pretty fluffy with them if you want

the other option is (and I know you said you dont like GK's but.....) henchmen armies as you can really go to town on fluff and conversions and make some really nice, unique armies such as admech, mercs etc

my little space marine army, now 20% cooler http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/424613.page

I would suggest Tau or Eldar as either of those wil likey be the next Dex. A new Dex could be the thing you need to spark your enthusiam into starting a new army.

You could always look into expanding your daemons army if you enjoy them, they are supposed to be getting a new codex soon if the rumors are true.

Eldar are a very old codex (4th edition?) and with the new codex rumored to drop this year, I wouldn't advise anyone to start collecting them.

With a new codex, point values will fluctuate (likely down) and new models will be released. Using the Eldar jetbike that's been shown for years as an example, I'd be very disappointed to buy the current 90's era model only to have the new one drop in a few months. Same goes for the Gaurdian kit... Be patient, save your money and rejoice when Eldar get their new releases and you can buy all the great stuff. No sense in potentially wasting money on inferior models or inferior units for the game.

Ebay will always be there.
