So I'm trying to build an "elite" nid list that focuses on lots of medium-sized creatures backed by light MC's and some swarm overtones, when i get to HQ choices. Having just started building my army but a few months ago, my current HQ is the Red Terror proxied as a tyranid prime. I've heavily considered the parasite of mortrex, but due to a recent amazing deal on ebay, i managed to get my hand on a malanthrope model; something I've had my eyes on for a while.

That being said, i took a look at his current rules (Not the ones where he is a 250pt nightmare), and can't help but contemplate their viability in 6th edition. The main thing I see going for them is that they can be taken in broods of up to 3 at just a little over 100 points each. The fact that they have 4 wounds each and regeneration built in makes them seem like a very resilient HQ choice. Sadly, a single well-placed demolisher shot can take out the entire unit - just gone.

So what are your opinions on Malanthropes in 6th? Yay? Nay?

Nay. Just like 5th edition. Especially with Flyrants existing Malanthropes don't really add anything to the HQ slot.

Edit: they add a nifty cool way to get preferred enemy. But it's so situational you can't count on it.
