Hey guys, i used to play fantasy and now venturing into 40k so im looking for ideas as to what to invest into model wise and a good 500 point list to get really started with. Suggestions would be great and keep in mind im new to this army. Thanks guys.

Hey mate, sounds similar to me, I used to play fantasy years ago, gave it away and have now just restarted with 40k and Grey Knights. I am by no means any form of expert but can offer you some basics.

As you are aware, with all armies, there are almost endless possibilities and combinations, Grey Knights are no exception, with access to henchmen and their ability to customise.

The first thing I will suggest is to buy the models you like. The whole aim of the hobby is to enjoy and you have to like your models! That been said I will assume you have decided on GK because you like the look of generic GK models and I will ignore henchmen. 500 points is difficult to recommend a start because the models you get now will be the base for the rest of your army as it expands.

With that thought in mind here is a suggestion that you can't really go wrong with because these models will serve you well in most lists and the variety gives you the opportunity to use different abilities and models instead of duplicating the same units over and over.

HQ
25pt. Ordo Mallaeus Inquisitor (Coteaz model). Buy the Coteaz model (so you can use him later) and run him as a generic Inquisitor for this 500pt list.

Troops
110pt. 5 x GK Strike Squad. 1 x Psycannon and 4 x swords. Strike Squads are generally the mainstay of a GK army. Expand later to a 10 man squad with additional Psycannon and a Daemonhammer.
205pt. 5 x GK Terminators. Justicar with sword, 1 x Incinerator and Daemonhammer, 1 x Daemonhammer, 2 x Halberds. Maybe put a magnet on his arm so you can switch to a psycannon later.
or
205pt 5 x GK Strike Squad. 1 x Psycannon, 1 x Daemonhammer and 3 x swords in a Razorback with Lascannon and TL Plasma Gun or just TL Lascannon (pending your preference).

Heavy Spt
160pt. Nemesis Dread Knight with Incinerator. Excellent crowd control with his incinerator, hard to kill and deals a lot of damage in CC. Suggest putting a magnet on his sword hand so you can add a sword to him as you expand.

Total: 500pt.

I'm sure others can make a better/more powerful 500pt list but this is a great start and gives you the ability to use, experiment and refine tactics with basic units in 40k and a GK army. Which troop preference you take (Terms or Strikes in a Razorback) should be what you like the look of and want to use.

Good luck!

At 500 pts grey knights are not really an army unless you want to just use the inquisitorial henchman. I'd stay clear of any terminators at 500pts as well just focus on the power armor units and a cheap inquisitor probably just the base model with the psyker upgrade.

Future shopping list would probably be:
Coteaz <- Codex All-Star
8x Power Armor Boxes
2x Dreadknights
3x Terminator boxes(1 box can be used to build your "no model" HQs)

I need to return some video tapes.

40K:
5000+ points W/D/L: 10/0/6
4000+ points W/D/L: 7/0/4
1500+ points W/D/L: 16/1/4

Fantasy
4000+ points W/D/L: 1/1/2
2500+ points W/D/L: 0/0/3

If I were to restart my GKs and was going to start with 500pts. I think I would go with something like this:

Inquisitor
w/ power armor so you don't give slay the warlord or first blood to easily
Strike squad (10)
Psybolt ammo
Daemon hammer (maybe not sure on points cost)
Strike squad (10)
Psybolt ammo
Daemon hammer (again not sure on points)

That gives you 20 GKs that you could combat squad and during the shooting phase are hitting and wounding other marines on a 3+ . With any luck, whomever you're facing can't deal with all those power weapons and you have 4 scoring units to take the game. From there to add onto the army I would get a dreadknight, a dreadnought, and some terminators.
