A quick
WIP of the first base of
Angel Barracks infantry I'm working on:
Although the detail on these minis is superior to that found on the Brigade Models range, I had my doubts about how practical it would be to paint them with any precision. However, once I'd got the first basecoat and wash onto them, the details started to leap out. The front mini in this trio - a little out of focus, but I'll work on that when I take the finished pictures - is a female officer, which is not only rare to see at 6mm but also surprising to see both clear and yet, at the same time, still looking harcore military. She's not the only female in the range, and the next base I'm painting has a female trooper on it. Quite apart from the frontbumps, the model is really well designed and sculpted. I love her bare arms and relaxed pose, as well as the design of the armour.
The chap on the left is firing a missile launcher. This mini isn't sculpted quite as well in itself, but the weapon is well detailed and clear - it's much more than just a tube. The one on the right is a basic trooper. The rifles are enormous, which is a bit of a shame, but they have really good detail - cooling vents, fore and rear grips, underslung weapons (although whether they are grenade launchers, flamethrowers or chainblades is a bit unclear), carry handles and magazine housings. There are some clear design cues throughout - the helmets have a distinct shape and aren't just a blob. All the troopers have body armour, webbing and patrol packs.
Overall, I'm really impressed and have no hesitation in recommending these minis for 6mm
SF enthusiasts. Michael at Angel Barracks is designing a 6mm skirmish game to accompany the minis, which had me raising my eyebrows, as it's rarely easy to distinguish 6mm minis well enough to play skirmish style without getting confused. But in this case I must tip my hat to him. They models were cheap to get sculpted, I know, but it was money well-spent and I look forward to seeing many more Angel Barracks infantry in my collection. For now, I'll be fielding them as special forces, but they could run happily as light infantry alongside a powered armour style heavy infantry, or as heavy infantry in a more near-future style of force.
I'll be painting the base with the minigun next. Can't wait!
