I'd say I'm a fairly experienced 40k player and was thinking about starting a tyranid army sometime soon. I've been looking up a bunch of info about them including tactics and I've learned a lot in the last few weeks. I have the codex but I've been hesitant on buying models right away. I have a few questions regarding the army; what are the best units to use now and what should I stay away from? Also, how to utilize the army to its full potential? I'm attempting a maybe 2k army at first then expanding from there. Any feedback is great - thanks in advance!

I would highly suggest checking out The Tyranid Hive.

The only strictly Tyranid forum in the net. AWESOME Tyranid tactica.

I'll give a shout out to Infornography's link:

Great info for the beginning tyranid player.

Tyranids have a limited number of great builds. They all revolve around Tervigons and Flyrants. After two of each of these, you can then add what you want from basically the following list:

Gants in a Pod with devourers
Basic gants
Ymgarl genestealers
Biovores
Trygons
The Doom in a pod
Hive Guard
Zoanthropes
Another Tervigon
Gargoyles
The Swarmlord (to replace a flyrant)

For great Tyranid tactics, I'd check out jy2s Battlereports, and for decent but less great tactics and Batreps, the link in my signature to my blog. Also, thetyranidhive is indeed good referrence!

Thanks, Roxor - excellent, excellent material.

I still play my early 1st edition 'Nids army - back when the only models were what later became Termagants (they were just 'Tyranids' then), Zoat slaves, and Genestealers from the original space hulk game. Needless to say, now that Codex Tyranids should be renamed Codex Tervigons, it gets tougher and tougher to find anything regarding non-MC builds, but the hive has a lot of interesting threads!

For the greater glory of the Zoat Empire!
