Would it be a viable idea to put in some 10 man tacs to have more bodies whist being cheaper to support the deathwing assaults.

Say 4 squads of DW termies and 2 squads of tacs? and maybe a squad of devs?

Yeah, ofcourse.
Someone has to capture those objectives and give fire support.

thanks for the reply. I was thinking plasma gun and cannon tac squads for fire support. What do you guys think?

Depends on what you're using them for. If they're just there to be bodies on the field and/or late objective grabs then maybe a Vet Sarg and that's it. For fire support I'd look at PCannon and flamer or melta and combat squad them out. Have a runner sqd and a gunner sqd

I've been rolling around the idea of something similar with a 4-2 breakdown, but putting one tac sqd in a drop pod to get that locator beacon on the table turn 1 then DWA turn 2.

That droppod idea sounds solid. Put 5 in there with say a multi melta and the other 5 hold it down in the back? Another 10 man tac squad with fire support elsewhere and hold objective?

Also dont droppods come down first? Can you use the beacons for DWA turn 1 then? Dont have codex in front of me.

How about ML w flak for some anti air

They say you never appreciate what you have until it is gone. I fear that isn't true for your mind.

@canadianguy

I was thinking ML for the devs. One shot Str 7 flakk just doesnt do it for me for the tac squads.

Half of your drops (rounding up) are auto on T1, but the beacon has to be on the table to work for the DWA, so that first squad is a bit of a sacrificial lamb. I wouldn't expect the squad to live so probably just bolters and leave them at 10. If you're really luck your opponent doesn't think about the beacon and leaves the drop alone, cause hey it's just 1 storm bolter.

With a pod on the table and Belial you'll have two points of guaranteed placement so you can divide an conquer.

Beacons only work if they were on the table at the start of the turn. So if you pod in and your pod has a beacon, your DW won't be able to use it and will still scatter unless they are with Belial. However, that being said, using a beacon on a ravenwing squad to DS Deathwing T1 works, since the RW are deployed before the start of T1.

EDIT: Also as a note, green bodies would definitely help since Deathwing still count against your reserves total, so it would help you bring all of your terminators down together.

Are you certain about this? The way I read it is that since you declare which units will be using the DWA after Warlord traits, but before unit deployment anyone using DWA would not be counted against your 50% since they must enter play through Deep Strike. Since the FAQ established that the order of the turn does matter (psyker powers that affect reserve rolls) the specific designation that it is after warlord traits would class them as a must be in reserve unit like anyone in a drop pod

1. Scouts with bolters gettting in close to the enemy

2. Drop pods (2 of them because you took 3) full of tactical marines come in close to the scouts in support on turn one

3. Two squads of deathwing arrive via a turn 2 Deathwing assault using the locator beacons on the drop pods (didnt I mention those?)

As a note, the third pod belonged to a devestator squad which deployed on foot and combat squaded. Their drop pod has a deathwind launcher on it and will come in wherever its most useful, whenever it becomes available. The dev's also have missile launchers with flakk to deal with any pesky fliers. Try all this out and enjoy the synergy. Who needs Ravenwing?

(P.S. You can actually just do without the locator beacons if your using Belial. Put him in a 10 man squad and nominate him to arrive turn 1 via Deathwing assault. All your remaining terminators can be left in normal reserve and will be rolled for normally. In that instance, Scouts to target zone, Belial drops right on target, both pods deploy in support of Belial's squad, 3rd pod as normal)
