My gaming club usually plays indie skirmish games, but a few of us do have 40k armies and one of our members is a new wargamer and absolutely mad for 40k. Thus we temporarily sidestepped our passion for independent, affordable gaming and spent some time in that grimdark universe where war is constant, money flows like water and cranial embellishments never go out of style.
An AAR of our Dark Angels Vs Imperial Guard game with force lists, some pics and thoughts on the game from a member relatively new to wargaming (the main author of the post above) and a gamer new to 6th edition 40k (myself).

And of course a few pics to entice you to visit...

Nice little repeort, I enjoyed it.
I thought the DAs might take that one but losing Sammul early was a blow I feel.
With plasma and pie plates the guard did well.
I think turbo boosting the bikes was definitely needed.
By turn 3 you were down to a Dread and Flyer? ouch!

Yep, buy the time 3 was over, he had just the dread and flyer. You would think the game kind of stalled then, but it was an oddly close. There were three squads of mine ( I was IG) left with 3 figures left or less (including my commander), and I had very little chance of hitting the flyer a second time.
If the game had gone on for two turns more, he very well may have been able to finish off two squads and bring the game to a tie. If one of them had been my commander, he could have won!

That was a nice report! A little concise, but theres nothing wrong with that i guess. I think you need more anti-armour in your DA list. A CML on some Assault Termies if youre adding more. Or a Predator instead of the assault cannon speeder and 3 bikes. Did the Ravenwing bikes have any melta or plasma guns?

Thanks! We appreciate any advice you all can offer.
There was plasma on one or two of the bikes. I'll definitely mention this thread to the DA player so he can pick up some tips.

Hello! I am the DA player!
Thanks for the comments. It all sounds like great advice! I had 3 plasma talon bikes, and 3 other plasma guns. I also had a multi-melta.
I don't think my problem was the amount of fire, but my actions in the first turn. If I had turbo boosted, then assaulted first turn, i could have held up the IG squads in his first turn, then used hit and run to back out, shoot, then assault again. I think it would have been a much better tactic. I just didn't use the fast attack units to their full potential. I think I also could have started the army more spread out in a better tactical position, but I really wanted them to ride in as a large group with Sammael at the lead. Again, fluffy and cool, but not the best tactical choice.
I could have taken more Deathwing (I can field 35 termies, plus Knights), or green heavy support, but I made it a fluffy Ravenwing list instead of a competitive dual wing list.
It was a great learning experience, and a really fun game!
I have dual-wing, greenwing, and deathwing lists to try out whenever Eilif is ready for the rematch!

You don't need to cluster around the Darkshroud with everything. Only one model in each unit needs to be within range to get stealth for the entire unit as the stealth special rule only requires a single model in a unit to have the rule to confer it to the squad. Also you would not have been able to turbo boost and charge on the first turn. Turbo boosting keeps you from charging in the subsequent assault phase. Good luck with your army, I am a fellow DA player myself. Imperial guard can be a tough fight depending on the composition.

Nice board, I loved the paint on your Guard! I love seeing basilisks on the board, never seem them anymore.
That Ravenwing really tempts me to make a biker marine army I cooked up a while back...
I have a question, how good was the Master of the Ordnance in this game? I've been tempted to try him out.

Glad you enjoyed the report. Basilisks aren't very common these days, but I think they really fit the big-guns vibe of the guard.
The Master of ordinance isn't a reliably effective character. IIRC, I think I might have scored one or two hits with him in the last game. However, I like a bit of randomness and 30 points seems like a fairly cheap cost for even an inaccurate pie plate.
