I play vanilla marines, but I really don't like their storm shields. So I bought the Dark Angels terminator set. Would you be alright with someone using the deathwing knights as count-as termintors with SS/TH, with the maces being the thunder hammers?

I would probably make the maces into actual hammers or swap them, but even without they are probably fine. Especially if you are just playing vanilla.

I'd be okay with that, providing you made it clear they were normal ss/th termies

I would give the Sergent the actual Thunder Hammer bit, and remove/don't include the overt Dark Angels icons (like the Knights' shoulder pads) as an indication that the squad isn't actually Deathwing Knights.
If I saw, for instance, a squad of Terminators painted as Ultramarines with the robes and with some of the members having the power mace bitz, I would assume they are meant to be Assault Terminators with some extra visual flavor.

I'm ordering imperial fist shoulder pads from FW and I've shaved off the more obvious dark angels iconography.

Sounds fine. The knights' maces are actually pretty huge, so I'd be okay with using them to represent thunder hammers.

Sounds perfectly cool to me!
Counts-as like this used to be the norm, not the exception.

Even completely unconverted would be fine with me as long as you aren't playing DA (whether main army or allies). In a C:SM army there is no possible other unit that the knights could be confused with, the only thing they could possibly represent is TH/SS terminators. Since there's no possible confusion there's no legitimate reason to object to it.
However, if you want to play in a tournament you need to ask the TO, not poll the forum. For example, GW events would not allow it because they want you to buy a box of assault terminators in addition to the deathwing knights you use in your "casual" army.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

Counts as is generally fine by me, I love it when people put some effort into making their army unique.

I would personally still prefer that they had hammers and not maces, but I wouldn't be that sticky about it... The hammers would make it the most clear though, I really like when I don't have to try to see what you're counting as.

Since you have the big shields on them, I wouldn't worry about someone mistaking them for anything but SS/TH termies. If anything, you could do a little finagling and turn one side of the mace into the hammer's face if you're really anal about it looking like a hammer.

I'm sometimes skeptical of using a unit from one army directly in another, but the addition of appropriately markes shoulderpads, makes them completely game-worthy in my opinion. Sounds like you've found a really nice simple conversion to add a bit of flair to your vanilla army

Maces are fine as thunder hammers. They clearly aren't power fists and storm bolters, nor are they lightning claws so process of elimination only leaves one possibility. Anyone who gives you crap about it isn't somebody you should be playing anyway.

It is fine in an army other than DA. The confusionin a DA list would be a bit much.

That is true. If I were using the kit as such in a non- DA army, I would even go the distance to not use the robed torsos on them, as that eliminates a further link. Non robed torsos, and a Sergeant with the actual Hammer (if it were in my army) should be a pretty obvious counts-as.
I probably shouldn't even get into the craziness where I would like to use the Axe of Caliban weapon/arms, with a wrist-mounted Storm Bolter (Grey Knight style) as a unique Storm Bolter/ Master-Crafted Power weapon setup on one of my Blood Angels Terminator Sergeants..........

As long as you are strictly C:SM, and don't have DA, I'd be fine with unmodified Deathwing Knights as TH/SS.
