Hi all, I want to try a list for BA that has 2 squads of missile devies, a Libby, 2 Fragnaughts in pods, 3 tac squads, stormraven, 3 multi melta attackbikes, and a assault squad. I was thinking of getting a drop pod for every squad, but only only actually dropping 2 tac squads and the Fragnaughts. The rest will come down empty. I'm thinking of dropping the Fragnaughts and 2 empty ones on turn 1, the empty ones have locator beacons. Since I would have so many drop pods, could I potentially force my opponent behind or to attack the drop pods, rather than the rest of my army?

I wrote a blog on blockers:
http://40kunorthodoxy.blogspot.com/2012/08/warhammer-40k-blockers.html

So my take on this is twofold.

First is this: Grenades. It simply IS tue that enemies can really hurt your pods with grenades and create a lot of KP. So you are leaving yourself a little vulnerable in that mission unless you have a solid plan. For that kind of operation, i am surprised you favor tactical Marines but since you do, you're going to have to REALLY measure out those distances and make sure you give your men the chance to act after they drop.

Having said all that, the Drop pods provide cover and with a Priest around and the libby, its quite likely that that could really protect your troops pretty well. The Shrouding Power and Feel No Pain hiding behind pods? tough to kill.

This would work EXCEPTIONALLY well in the Relic mission. I myself have thrown my women into battle, sacrificing unit after unit to form walls the enemy simply cant move passed fast enough. It works. A pod army is kind of ideal for attempting that.

My only concern in doing it with Pods is that Pods can't be reimbarked. So whereas with a Rhino, I would disembark, thusly saturating the enemy with targets, and thus less total units die/are made combat ineffective than would have been the case. Then the remnants could get back in and they are now scoring, their rhinos still alive. This tactic is a time play but it works.

You dont have that flexibility with the Pods so you are going to have to make the pods themselves a concern to the enemy. If you do this I think it may mke sense to put Deathwind Launchers on them. Forces the issue of them trying to kill the pods rather than your men.

maybe you should show a list where you do that so we can look more closesly at it.

Also, the StormRaven while it is super cool, may or may not be overly necessary if you do this many pods.

I use a similar tactic all the time with my Ultramarines. In all humility, it has worked very very well. Go for it.

This looks strong. You have 4 troops Choices (important), you have a serious wall going on. I'd maybe try to squeeze Multimeltas instead of Missile launchers into ONE of the Dev squad pods though and put combi Flamers on the troops instead of Meltas. Your grenades can blow up a lot of tanks and the Multimelta devs should take care of the most presssing issue that Grenades really can't: Land Raiders.

Try that.

You could try a squad of death company with boltguns. they are very nasty when put in a drop pod... I prefer to just give them bolters so they can rapid fire, since they already have 2 attacks and get another 2 for charging...they get their own feel no pain, and are fearless to boot...and they can rapid fire and still charge on turn 2...with furious charge it even makes killing vehicles easy when you charge. The main point of this tactic for me is to screen the on coming assault with a unit that I know my opponent has no choice but to deal with...they have better range and more survivability than the fraggy dreads and do not need any characters to make them effective (although adding a reclusiarich is very nasty ).
