Units 1 & 2 are fighting in CC. the model shaded in black (in unit 2) is unengaged. (he's too far away to fight). Unit 3 is assaulting unit 2 from behind.

In a real battle unit 2 would be completely slaughtered by the assault from behind. (they were focused on the battle they were in, completely oblivious to anything happening behind them)

Proposed Rule: If a model is engaged in combat and then is assaulted it has a WS of zero against the unit that just assaulted it. However t the model shaded in black would fight with his normal WS as he is not engaged in combat.
