A friend and I are looking into possibly starting Warmachine/Hordes after years of playing Warhammer 40k & Fantasy and I had just a couple questions. I know armies from each game can be played against each other but if one were to pick a warmachine army and the other a hordes army would it mesh well in learning the game? Also ,are the starter boxes a good entry point into the game? For example will a warmachine starter box and a hordes starter box match up pretty evenly against each other? Thanks in advance!

Starter boxes are a great way to start.
I wouldnt say starters are 100% balanced, but its not bad and still better then anything GW.
Main issue is Some casters are better then others in the boxes... but the gap wont be huge by any means.
Warmachine / Hordes works perfectly fine against eachother, just different managment systems as long as you each have the rulebook for said side.
And regardless of what factions are chosen. They all are viable. You wont end up with something unplayable.
Just to note: Every faction is good and can win. But not every Warlock/Warcaster is amazing.
Best way to start is get a battlebox each and give it a go.
Its great fun.

Thank you for the help! Do you get a pretty good feel for a army if you buy the battlegroup? For instance the khador one comes with the caster and 2 jacks, it seems like you wouldn't get a good feel on how some other aspects of the army, like infantry, play?

I suggest checking the Sticky at the top of this forum and it has a listing about every faction and should give you a good idea on how they all work..

i would generally recomment warmachine v warmachine or hordes v hordes straight out of the gate as a starting gamer. its slightly easier when both of ye are playing off the same hymn sheet! That said, all factions are pretty well balanced, so its not like warmachine v hordes wont or cant work as a general rule - it works fine. but like i said, the focus/fury mechanics of warmachine/hordes, especially at a starting point might leave one or other of you feeling at a disadvantage until you get to grips with the game.

I would reccomend the faction that appeals to you visually. Play something you like the models of, don't worry about balance. Everything is balanced(although Fury is slightly more powerful than Focus)

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines
Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Everything is not perfectly balanced. There are some things that are a bit better or a bit worse. But much more balanced than say, Warhammer. Also, some things have synergy that makes them good, but on their own or with the wrong stuff they are kind of terribad.
Fury seems more powerful in some ways, but not neccesarily. There are things you can do with focus that you cannot do with fury and vice versa. I wouldn't say more pwoerful, just different.

I like we decided to go with Warmachine. He like's the look of Cygnar and I like Khador so I belive that's the route we are going to go, are both those battlegroups a pretty good place to start?

Yeah, those 2 starter boxes are pretty good and represent the factions fairly well.
