I'm really thinking about purchasing the planetary empires set but was hoping you Dakka junkies could help me out and let me know if its worth it and what I'm getting. I think I get the general concept but is there anything else to know? Thanks!

I use the planetary empires in our local league where I play. The tiles you get (48 i believe) are fairly small, but detailed enough to look like a good map. The flags break easy, i'm going to try some push pins this coming campaign and see if they do better for marking territory.

If you're going to get the set I recommend looking online first for some ideas of how others have run their campaigns. I'm doing a modified Crusade of Fire campaign in March, but overall getting set up isn't terribly hard.

If you're going to use this with friends I would ask them to split the cost, since you all will be sharing the board equally.

Good luck on your campaign!

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

We also use the planetary empires tiles. Right now I have just one set but considering buying another for a larger map.

I can confirm that the tiles are detailed and the flags do break easily. If possible, track down a Crusade of Fire book to go along with it. We're playing a slightly modified version of that and it's a LOT of fun.

I bought a 2x2 sheet of 1/4" plywood and hot glued the tiles down for our latest campaign. The plywood board is mounted on the wall so everyone can see it. The reason I used hot glue is that it's strong enough to hold it but easy enough to peal off later when we are done. Last week the local GW acquired some laser cut plywood that was the exact size to fit various planets for their CoF campaign. Looked good if you can find someone to do that.

Note that I've looked into using brass rod to build up new flags, but the hole size is off just enough that standard rod sizes don't fit snugly. Currently considering other options such as placing a magnet in all of the holes.. Although weak, the included flags are okay if you are careful with them; and they certainly don't fall out of the holes on their own. Unfortunately I had the board down a couple weeks ago and my 2 year old decided the flags looked better laying down on their sides... The good news is that there are a LOT of flags in the box...

I got some push pins from staples with different colored sphere tops. Using foam core as a base, the pins go into the tiles and stay put. So far it seems to solve the flimsy flag issue.

We used it in a couple of our early campaigns. Ever since the Badab War books came out, we haven't bothered with it again.
