So I am looking into a ally team for my tau as a bit of a diversion and was looking for some input.

The store manager at my local hobby store suggested on going with Eldar, we where talking for a while and I don't quite remember all of the conversation so I looked around but I have to say I'm not too sicked to play with them.

I was thinking of going with Black Templars but Im worried about the generation gap. I was hoping to get a larger group of opinions on who would make a good Tau ally team.

From what I've seen/read/heard the consensus seems to be that orks make the best allies for tau. I've seen a ton of tau/orks online and several in my meta. You can uses huge squads of shoota boyz and a big mek with a KFF as a buffer to keep all of your shooty bits out of CC. They serve a similar purpose to kroot, but are vastly superior, and they also allow you to bring a dakkajet if you need an air option, and/or lootas for more mass shooting. The two armies do a nice job of covering each others weaknesses.

I can't really speak to how BTs would synergize as allies for tau, but most SM chapters could offer you some durable troops if thats what you're after. Ideally DA and SW would probably offer the best basic troops and HQs. I'm a bit biased but I'd say SW make good allies for just about anyone.

I may be completely biased here but I think that eldar would be a good choice

you bring in a farseer in and put fortune and/or guide on your shooty units and they would be nearly unstoppable

I'm with ragingmunkyz, Orks seem to be the best and you can get so many that anything that tries and CC through them is just going to get bogged down and never seen again. Any armour can be taken out by Tau weapons. Or Space Wolves because they're awesome and have pet wolves.

I would personally go with Space Marines. Drop Podding marines would make a great downfield distraction while your big guns tear your opponent up.

Guard or orks, as they both provide large numbers of expendable bodies that can still add to the overall firepower of the army.
