Now, I haven't even played a proper game with real people yet, but this makes me happy for some reason. It's pretty awesome!

I've never played oD&D, and if it's anything like 2e I'll hate it, but damn that's a snazz set up.

Kinda sorta do want

Pricey, but I'd love to own it. The only local copy I know of is sealed and autographed by Gary Gygax himself, so that ain't getting opened...

They're also doing PDF versions of various old editions. This version pre-dates me (predates my existence, I think, much less being able to read and comprehend a game).

Keep in mind that this is 'D&D' not 'AD&D'... 2e usually refers to AD&D 2nd (an old favorite of mine, but I recognize it's not to everyone's taste... I might not want to deal with it today, for example) which is really a sort of 'parallel evolution' path.

Either way, it's definitely in the 'minimal rules/DM-Says' sort of play, which is great if the GM is in sync with the players and wants them to have fun instead of the more adversarial GM vs. Player style many see as common to many versions of D&D.

Is this one of the editions where "Elf" and "Dwarf" where classes?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Actually not. That was a later simplification in the 1977 introductory Dungeons & Dragons version (a basic D&D covering only levels 1-3, edited by J. Eric Holmes), a convention which was also used in the 1981 (Tom Moldvay) and 1983 (Frank Mentzer) editions, as well as the 1991 D&D Rules Cyclopedia (Aaron Allston).

The original D&D, which this set covers, had separate race & class, which were also separate in AD&D.

In part due to a legal dispute between creators Gygax and Arneson, D&D and AD&D were treated as separate games by TSR from the late 70s until they were purchased by Wizards of the Coast in the 90s, and the race/class split was one of the most prominent differences between otherwise obviously similar games.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I was thinking of the racial class restrictions.

Its nothing like AD&D of any edition. It is the Original edition. What you would be playing way back in 1974. Plus the expansions. Totally different feel and expereince. Much more "sandbox" than as well defined as it i now. Truley a game where "anything that can be imagined can be attempted" . Plus compared to Ebay prices for those books, a pretty good deal.

Yeah,a friend of mine loves the steampunks et he got from them a couple years ago.

They also seem pretty resistant to wear as compared to a lot of 'printed' dice I've seen. I might get a set myself.

WotC did white dice with purple detailing last year for GenCon. You had to hit all their events tog et a full set, though. It was a 'drow' theme, so the dice have a purple spidery design motif.

I would agree that it's a bit more open and specifically congenial to house ruling and customization, but AD&D 1E is actually very similar to OD&D with the expansions. AD&D 1st edition basically is a cleaned up and better organized revision of OD&D. I've had the good fortune to discuss it a bit and play it with Tim Kask.

I now hate you.

Lucky git.
