Game: Crusade + Dawn of War

Warlord Traits: both of us got -1 to enemy reserves, fortunately this will only effect Dale and not me .

Deployment

Objectives had been placed with two my side of the board, two Dale's side and one in the centre.

Dale won the roll off for deployment and chose to go first, which is handy as night fighting is on. He deploys spread across the table edge with Spyders and Scarabs in the centre and then one of each vehicle on each flank.

I split my deployment between a ruin and have three Rhinos and a Dreadnought each side with a Dreadnought and Servitor unit inside the ruin on a an objective. Coteaz's unit deploy in a ruin on the left holding the objective.

* Tactical Notes

At the moment Dale has spread himself across the board, now whatever comes down towards me I am going to gun down. Interestingly the Scarabs and Spyders either can go one side of the shrine and some of my units won't get LOS, but Scarabs and Spyders get no cover from other units or come through the shrine and get cover and everything can see them. Will be interesting to see which way Dale takes.

My targets are the ABs and Scarabs; ABs are seriously annoying and if I wipe out the Scarabs then the Spyders cannot spawn.

Turn 1

I attempt to seize the initiative but fail even with re-rolls from Coteaz.

Necrons first turn; Dale comes down each flank with a AB and CBB while Ghost Arks hold in position. Spyders spawn swarms though two Spyders take a wound, the farm moves and runs. Dale also pops his first solar pulse.

Shooting; ABs fire and take out a Rhino on my left flank.

Grey Knights; I remain in position to get maximum fire power off.

Shooting; I dakka the AB on the right and it goes down. I dakka the AB on the left and it loses the shields and the bottom tesla gun. Psycannons and plasma cannons blast the Scarabs and Spyders, 6 swarms left and a Spyder dead and one with two wounds.

* Tactical Notes

Ok, not a brilliant start but not too bad. I was hoping not to give away first blood as the ABs were only snap firing, but gak happens. At least I have taken down one AB and the other has lost shields. On a further note the mini Scarab farm is taking damage, though next turn will be on me.

Next turn I hope to take out the now av11 AB, both CCBs and the Scarabs.

Turn 2

Dale rolls reserves and one Night Scythe comes in and moves down the right flank.

CCBS move up but still unable to sweep while Spyders spawn (another takes a wound) and the Scarabs go back to eight strong.

Shooting; lances and AB fires taking some hull points off a Rhino on the right flank and taking out another on the left flank. I think that's about it really.

Assault; Scarabs assault a Purifier unit, unit casts cleansing flame and takes out two Scarab swarms and then smacks some more, though ultimately the squad dies. CCB on the right flank charges the Rhino with only a single hull point and it goes boom; four Purifiers take wounds though only one fails armour saves.

Grey Knights; once again I remain static to get off maximum fire power.

Shooting; psycannons waste the Scarabs while plasma cannons kill all but one Spyder. Autocannons fire into the remaining AB though fail to take it out as night fighting helps Dale again thanks to the last pulse. Psycannons rip into the CCB on the right flank, though it is invincible and doesn't go down. Dreadnought fires at the Night Scythe and hits it though fails to do any damage.

* Tactical Notes

In between my turn and Dale's I was telling him I wanted to take out the last AB, both CCBs, Scarabs and the Night Scythe - looks like I spoke too soon! The Scarabs should have gone down a lot quicker, some rubbish dice rolls for shooting against them, but that is how it is. Perhaps I should have used plasma cannons to bomb them instead of psycannons and then used psycannons against the AB, though that would mean moving out and losing fire power. I am also disappointed the CCB on the right flank didn't go down along with the flyer, or at least cause some damage on the Night Scythe.

Next turn my target is still the CCB on the right (which is the warlord) and also the AB.

Turn 3

Dale rolls reserves and the other Night Scythe fails to appear from reserve.

CCB on the left flank sweeps over the Servitors and wipes them out (AB killed Coteaz) while CCB on the right sweeps a Rhino, but totally flops. Night Scythe comes towards me and the Deathmarks bail out - they had marked Purifiers btw.

Shooting; Deathmarks and attached Crypteks waste the Purifiers. AB blasts and wipes out a Purifier unit if I remember right. Night Scythe blasts my Dreadnought in the centre and it goes down.

Assault; CCB on the left assaults and smashes the Dreadnought while CCB on the right mashes up a Rhino.

Grey Knights; again I remain in position to maximise fire power.

Shooting; Purifiers dakka the rear of the CCB on the right and it loses two hull points after 5 pens and a glance (yes Dale's jink saves were good!), psycannons then finish it off. Last Dreadnought dakkas the Night Scythe and fails while plasma cannons bomb and wipe out the Deathmarks - Crypteks fail to get back up. Psycannons dakka the CCB on the right but fail to do any damage.

Assault; Crowe charges the Overlord now on foot and chooses to re-roll armour saves, passes test for mindshackles and scores a wound with cleansing flame, which Dale saves.

* Tactical Notes

Ok, another turn of failure, I was hoping the warlord's CCB on the right flank would go down after 5 pens and a glance but it just wouldn't budge. I really wanted to add more fire power into the Night Scythe. Ah well.

Turn 4

Last Night Scythe auto arrives and comes straight down the middle stopping by the objective.

Necrons; empty Night Scythe moves across the board 18" while CCB on left sweeps the last Rhino on that flank and takes it out, a Purifier dies in the blast.

Shooting; last AB fires into Purifiers and kills two. Night Scythe fires into the same squad, though aegis power armour is strong. Lances on the right flank fire into the last Rhino and it is gone, tesla from the Night Scythe which just appeared blasts into the Purifiers and two die.

Assault; Crowe dies, he is such a wimp. CCB charges Purifiers and kills two with hammer of wrath, I get all excited as my halberd hits and wounds but Dale easily passes save, only halberd remains.

Grey Knights; I move the two man Purifier unit on the left flank towards the objective and run them while the other unit moves to shoot and engage the warlord - it's hammer time!

Shooting; Purifiers blast the warlord Overlord who passes all armour saves.

Assault; Purifiers charge the Overlord, Overlord misses to hit as does the hammer, lol.

Previously we had agreed to end the game on turn 5 as we wanted to get some Magic: the Gathering in. We reviewed the situation and basically the Deathmarks would fly up and kill the two remaining Purifiers, Purifier in close combat would no doubt die while the Overlord may remain, Purifiers would also probably die. In either situation I wouldn't win so Dale takes this victory with a 9 (first blood, slay the warlord, linebreaker & two objectives)-3 (one objective) land slide.

Summary

Well things started off strong though I guess the dice gods do not like cockyness and my dice turned against me soon after. I guess that's the way it is in a dice game.

Dale played well, the only thing I may have done is deploy tighter and used the centre terrain to get the Scarabs and Spyders into terrain quicker - both have move through cover (beasts ignore terrain) and would have got cover instead of been shot to bits.

I guess sometimes the old static and fire doesn't always work. I know in objective games I have to move out but I thought with two objectives by me and the one ahead I should be able to pull it off, especially as Dale has two troop choices. But things didn't happen, better luck next time!
