I'm an avid 40k player.

I might end up actually investing in warmahordes.

the problem I have, nobody is defined as good or bad. Everyone is bad. There is no universal evil, so I'm not sure what to choose/ I'm always bad guys.

I like fast armies though, if that helps. Fast, and shooty. Light beasts and jacks is what I'll probably want.

I would ask what you think of cavalry and speedy infantry as well, because some factions lack light beasts and jacks but have cav and reasonably fast infantry.

Trolls are probably out, fast things seem to be limited to eDoomshaper goading the sh** out of heavy trolls to get them just a bit faster than normal troll lights, and trolls on buffalos.

Legion have quite a few fast beasts, flying ones as well, light cav on reindeer, and they are getting a warlock on a sleigh soon so she'll be fast as well.

Circle can move quickly with all their teleporting shenanigans and just generally decent SPD beasts (the wolfy ones anyway).

Khador can move pretty quickly with certain casters, but that is more infantry and cavalry rather than their jacks.

Other armies I'm not sure of, but every army does have one or two fast things, for example cygnar are by and large not tooo fast, but the minuteman and storm lances can move quite quickly, and eHaley can send 2 SPD 4 jacks 10" a turn, or 9" charging which isn't too bad, for the cost of 3 FOC, and one of them gets a free attack, or 12" and 11" for running and charging respectively, for the cost of 7 (Although no idea why you'd do that, they'd have almost no focus on them when they hit). AND KRAYE. Forgot about him. Makes all your jacks cavalry (heavy jacks become cav, light jacks become light cav), and yeah. Cavalry jacks. Whats not to love?

If you want fast and shooty with the label of "evil" then everblight is the army to choose.

Oh man... Kraye is for you! That's Jeremiah Kraye. Him and a bunch of light jacks is pretty dang fun. Then again last time I saw him used was during MK I. I'm not sure how his schtick is now.

Oh damn I completely forgot about Kraye, yeah he gets great mobility out of his army, be they lights moving up, having a shot and then bailing back out of threat range (hunters do this really well) or something like a stormclad making ride by attacks all around before slamming into a heavy and nearly trashing it under full throttle. You can do great things with him.

And cryx have quite swift light jacks, which pack arc nodes for some great synergy with some of their casters

i think cryx would be fun to run.

I like the Kraye model. He looks like a ww1 french officer...only steampunk and on a horse

Well if you do end up enjoying the game, the cryx starter box is a really good place to start if that is the army you decide upon, the caster that comes with it (prime Deneghra) synergises very well with the light jacks in the box (of which you get 3)

OOooo yeah... go for Cryx... they're wicked fun and have some nasty tricks. pDenegrha... or Dirty D as a friend used to call her... is pretty wicked fun to play with.

Circle are quite fast, and can do a bunch of teleporting. Circle is also quite evil, so that goes right along with what you are looking for.

An entire faction of crazy druids that use fleshcrafting to create monsters out of nightmares to slaughter their enemies with.

I think legion and circle fit you well. Circle isn't overtly evil, even noble at times, but they have their moments. Legion is pretty darned evil all the time. They also both come in the hordes two-player starter, so that is a big bonus. If you are indecisive you can get two armies for the cost of one.

Cryx fits your ideals as well, but their lights are almost utility pieces while the infantry does most of the work and they have very little shooting. If that appeals to you then you have a third option.

Go Legion of Everblight, evil god level dragon's primitive spawn and its enslaved elves. Net result fast and shooty. Hordes runs more beasts than Warmachine runs 'jacks. If you don't like the look of Legion look at Cryx, another god level dragon's undead.
Most factions are at least barely respectable, not Cryx an Legion, their goal is world domination, the rest have some noble justification.

How is the Legion playstyle compared to Cygnar? I am torn between in and Cryx as my second faction, but I want something that plays differently.

I understand that Legion is far more beast than troops oriented, which I like, but I worry that both it and Cygnar are all about shooting off the enemy's troops, and then struggling against their jacks/beasts. Is that the case? Or can the Legion do well as a melee force?

How about Cryx? I know they are all about melee, which I like, and even lighter on jacks than Cygnar, which I am ok with(they are kinda boring to paint after the first). But they are still a warmachine faction, so I suspect I'd get more variety by going hordes. Opinions?

I played cygnar since mk1 and recently started legion. They have similar assets but use them differently. Legion's very heavy slant toward beasts and relative lack of buffs make them feel rather different from cygnar. There is also a big difference going from one of the most focus-limited factions to one of the best fury-managing factions.
Neither faction is all shooting. If you take a gunline you will find a hard counter fast and get mowed down. Both factions (all factions except cryx and minions really) like a combined arms list with enough melee punch to make a quick sweep and enough guns to force the enemy to close in.
Cryx are indeed highly melee oriented and highly infantry oriented. It isn't that their jacks are bad, just frail. Also cryx infantry are bonkers, so that helps.

The Bleak Land of Gehenna (a.k.a Kentucky)

It depends on how you use Legion and Cygnar. While playing Legion I was able to take out a Khadoran heavy with an assault charge from a Carnivean. In a different turn with that same model, I managed to take out most of a unit of Doom Reavers with one breath weapon attack. I've managed similar shenanigans with Cygnar.

If you focus on lots of low-power attacks and neglect heavier power attacks, then you'll run into the scenario where you wipe out troops but struggle against heavier models. If you make sure to balance things, you'll be fine.

I'm giving circle a spin.
As soon as my models get here, I'm painting them up, and going to the hobby store, to try to learn from the local press ganger.

Massive wolves rushing down the field towards some unsuspecting prey seems exciting enough to me.

In my opinion, the game is based in luck, well some or most parts of it. I believe that it doesn't matter who was the most powerful, nor OP models. I believe just go what you feel like, and like in my other post, going with what you feel like gives you morale, and morale makes you feel lucky.

Also, screw up once, and your opponent can take advantage of your screw up. But I like Cryx, Mercs, and Menoth, they play pretty well, (IMO).
