The fluff for the Tyrant Guard says that there are reports (heretical lies of course ) of them possessing the Space Marines trademark Fussed rib cage and Black Carapace, due to their design aiming to be the ultimate form of resilience, so they can take the hits for the Tyrant.

Now the fused ribcage I get, sounds mighty useful. However, why do they have something akin to a Black Carapace? As I understand it, the Black Carapace is a kind of plastic layer inserted under the skin, which sends artificial nerves into the body, allowing the Space Marine to interface with his armour. So why do the Tyrant Guard have it?

Well, the Black Carapace is pretty rock solid too, that would add a little extra armour. I've always alos seen it as a sort of extension of the nervous system, so maybe it does that in the Tyrant Guard?

Maybe it's modified somehow so that instead of interfacing with armour it boosts their ability to receive telepathic commands from a Hive Tyrant?

Either that, or what you see as the body of the Tyrant Guard is actually armour and there's a little guy in there controlling it.

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

Hahha

Kidding aside, the increased receptability from the hive mind seems like a good explanation for the black carqpace
