I have a friend who has two can sof Army Painter's Ultramarines blue. I was planning on using it but I just don't know if it's the correct shade of blue that I want. I really liked Army Painter's Navy Blue, however, it got discontinued. What techniques do you guys use for painting ultramarines? Do you spray paint entirely blue? black? Use quick shade?

I undercoat them black, then basecoat Macragge blue, wash drakenhoff nightshade, heavy drybrush Altdorf Guard blue, highlight Calgar blue for characters and elite units, drybrush of Etherium blue for the rank and file.

Definitely use an Army Painter blue spray if you can find the perfect color. It will save you a lot of time and even if you paint your guys to Golden Daemon level, you will find that they look the exact same as your opponent's poorly painted Sloppy Joe army once you're standing at a distance while playing.

If the AP blues are not the right shade for you as they weren't for me, you will likely have to prime in black or white depending on how bright you want the blue, or perhaps even in grey. After that the method is up to you.

Personally I prime white, base in a blue, wash with Nuln Oil black, re-do in blue to brighten up the model (other people use blue glazes for this part) but leave the edges shaded black, then stop there because I'm not good at highlighting.
