I guess there is more than one question. I've only played a few games, and want to make sure Im not fudging up the rules. I couldn't see any other post that answered these questions.

1) Am I useing artillery right: Draw Line of Sight (spotter or guns) Roll to Range in (Is this 1 dice for the team?) Rolling to hit (Still 1 dice?) Fire Power Test for all the hit (Multiple Dice?)

2) For the 25 Pdrs that I take, what does the ROF 2 mean?

3) For LW, what is better 25 pdrs or 5.5s, or a combination (potentially 8 of each)?

4) Light mortar (Para's and some lorried platoons) do I need to range in with them?

5) Ive read in other posts that mention Direct Fire, what is it?

The Hit allocation question is lets say there is a Platoon of Pak 40s shooting at an Armoured Platoon of Sherman (2 normals and 1 fire fly) and the 2 shermans are are out in the front, with the fire fly out of line of sight (woods/ building) and He Hits with the Pak 40s which goes through the shermans (three hits). Does it also kill the fire fly which is out of sight?

Here's my take.
1) You've got it right I think.
2) The ROF for artillery is how many shots they get in direct fire. See below.
3) I'd mix them, I think you have to bring some 25pdrs before you can get the others anyway.
4) Light mortars work like normal teams shooting with the exception that they can fire over friendly teams with no penalty (but otherwise still need to be able to see the target directly.
5) Direct fire is when artillery or mortars fire directly like normal teams instead of firing a bombardment. In this case they usually have a different AT and FP value and a ROF value. It's used generally when enemy units get inside your minimum bombardment range or if you'd be better off firing directly due to the increased AT and FP value.

As for the hit allocation, if you can't see a particular model with the firing unit, it cannot have hits allocated to it, unless of course you're firing a bombardment again, in which case the template could damage the firefly if it touches it.

You roll to range in, you get three attempts, but British have a rule allowing a reroll on the first attempt. You range in on opponents skill (with modifiers like cover)
You then roll to hit on your skill with +1 for ranging in on 2nd attempt and +2 for third (always hit on 6)

Enemy teams then make saves (British can force enemy teams to reroll successful saves on an 'all guns repeat') then firepower tests to destroy/bail tanks or destroy infantry in bullet proof cover.

The rof is for shooting directly, not in a bombardment - it means you get two shots

For LW I'd go for 4 25pdrs and 2 5'5'' you get a double wide template with AT4 FP 4+ iirc which is pretty effective and cheap.

To clarify point 1).

You range in on a single target team (one dice) using the target team's experience.

Once you've succeeded in doing that you count the number of targets (team bases, tanks etc) under the template and roll multiple dice, one for each target.

Then you distribute the successful hits according to the hit allocation rules and do the saves and firepowere tests.

I think if it wasnt for dakka my friend and I would be lost, for the fact that FOW is not a very popular game here.

For clarification, for direct fire, you do not use the template; treat the guns as AT guns and use the listed ROF for direct fire.

For bombardments (aka indirect fire) you use the artillery template.

Can I still draw line of sight with my Observers to do a Direct Fire Hit? I.E. the Artillery is hidden behind some buildings or something.

Yup, if you are using direct fire just completely ignore that they are artillery and use all the same rules you would use if a regular gun is firing at something. So each gun gets to shoot at the ROF listed using line of sight.

A combination. 8 of each is massive investment in artillery which you wont normally do in game sub 2k points. At least i wouldnt. Also you cant legally field 5,5" artillery if you dont field at least as many 25pdrs or sextons.

The main purpose of artillery is pinning down infantry and as brit to force enemy infantry to move (read the "mike target" british special rule in the rulebook). It does this job just as good with less guns.
