Are the rules for whab fun?
My group likes to experiment with games, and we already have 28mm historicals. Is this rule set closer to warmaster or warhammer fantasy?
what time periods can be covered? (We have mostly vikings and Saxons and Normans)

"The horses look mighty thin today! And the men look absolutely starved! Perhaps we should hold a feast to brighten spirits, and fill bellies"- a slightly disillusioned tomb king to his herald.

Warhammer Ancients Battles is more similar to warhammer fantasy (circa 5th or 6th edition, without magic). I find it a lot of fun.

The downside is that it is now out of print (WAB 2.0) and so hard to find. Likewise, the new Armies of Antiquities 2.0 (army lists) are very rare.

You can easily pick up WAB 1.0/1.5 and some of the army books (shieldwall, fall of the west from the sound of your armies) for less on ebay, etc. Regardless, the army books are really good for background and eye candy.

There are some 'successors' to WAB, namely War and Conquest (free army lists on their website), written by Rob Broom, the former editor for Warhammer Ancients, and Clash of Empires (more tourney focused, I also think with lists on their website). Oh, and Hail Caesar (more like warmaster).

You could check out the wabforum (www.wabforum.com) ? They have subforums for all of the above games.
