Subject: So I think I know how I'm going to start FoW!

So my plan is to buy Open Fire tomorrow when I go upto Cardiff and I want to sell the German side on ebay since I'm going to build a British team (sorry Germans!).
Anyway, my idea was to build a: 2nd Household Cavalry Squadron (w/ Welsh) since it's Welsh and I get to use armoured cars AND this gives me an excuse to have a bright blue car with racing stripes on my field.
Here's the link if anyone can use it http://www.easyarmy.com/FOWCompany.aspx?PDF=18&Company=6
The list just seems really fun, cars everywhere!
So what do you guys think about the list? I picked it because it looked fun and I'm okay with taking a loss if I'm having a good time!
The only snag I've seen in my plan is that Open Fire gives Sherman tanks and this list requires Cromwell tanks, I'm not sure what I'm going to do at the moment, I mean, it's about a £15 price difference between the rule book and Open Fire and I can just keep the infantry from Open Fire and sell everything else? I'm stumped there, I'm not sure what to do here.
Anyways, with a bit of luck, I'll buy 4 Staghounds I for my HQ choice and maybe Open Fire or a Rule Book tomorrow.
What do you guys think? Sorry if I'm time wasting here though!
EDIT: Or I was thinking, I could buy the HQ and the Reconnaissance squad tomorrow and buy the rule book another time since in the worst case scenario I could borrow my mates rule book for a few days if he lets me, I always get snagged on rule books.

Honestly if you want to do welsh guards, then open fire is pointless. Get the rule book off ebay
There was a new army deal for cromwells (has 2 hq cromwells, 6 normal cromwells and the challengers) you also get MC10's and Stuart's.
You may find it easier to learn if you go welsh guards with armoured car support - (recon rules can be tricky) you can then get more armoured cars if you want.
Hq 2 Cromwell
2 platoons 3 Cromwell 1 challenger
Column platoon
2 MC10's
4 sextons
2 daimlers and 1 dingo

That's what I was thinking after reading the sticky, I mean, I can get a rule book for a bit cheaper with everything in it and the Open Fire set would just be spending money on something I don't need.
I suppose it would be best to go with something easier to learn though, the list you just mentioned, is the HQ just 2 Cromwells? Sorry if it sounds like a noob question but I'm dreadful with lists!

Yeah it is, they can join the other platoons - if you take other hq tanks the 2ic forms a platoon with them

It sounds pretty good then! Especially since I can pick up two Cromwells and the rule book tomorrow and have a read through the book and get to grips with everything then I can order the rest online. I might even pick up a cheeky Dingo.
I'm just gutted that this topic is so last minute since I only fully found out that we're actually going an hour ago.
Thanks for helping though, you've been really helpful!
I know I might be asking for a lot here but would you have any tips from playing? My friend hasn't played a propper FoW game and I've only played a rule book scenario or something down his house.

The basic advice I would give is 'be hit less than the opposition' that may sound stupid, but using concealment and manoeuvring to avoid being hit is key. If you can fire 1 shot at then and they can't shoot at you - you win

Firestorm Games has a Boxed set of the Welsh Guards for approx £108...
On the surface it doesn't sound like a good deal, but actually it's one of the best Boxed sets that BF have done.
17 Tanks, objective markers, decals, dice, tokens and some tank stowage markers.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest! |

Regards the large rulebook vs Open Fire, as another recent discoverer of FoW, I'd say the extra tenner or so for Open Fire might be well worth it, as you get loads and loads of great models (I've nearly finished the British and Germans, just the US Paras to do) to practice on, game counters and some flat scenery, more or less enough to play a roughly 800 point game right out of the box.
The big rulebook comes with the Forces and Hobby book, which are both good but not vital.
The big rulebook and the small version in Open Fire are identical down to the page number as far as the rules are concerned, the big one has some extra fluff.

Dang, I bought the Rule Book earlier and me and the guys left since I couldn't find any Dingo's or Cromwells, appart from an APC(?) recovery tank.
I was looking at the Welsh Guard box set earlier! The temptation was there to get it but I only had money for the Rule Book and then I bought a book for my mother. I also spotted the FoW buildings, really tempted to buy one of them too!
But I'm glad I bought the rule book before buying any more stuff I think, now that I've gotten the rule book I can look through the different armies, in bed, and make my mind up properly, I'll probably still go British though.
Would Open Fire still be worth picking up though? I don't want to sound like I'm completely milking things though Would you be able to replace Cromwells with Shermans in a list or will it have to be the right choices?
I wouldn't have been able to buy it today anyway, I wouldn't have been able to fit it in my bag
Thanks for the replies though guys, I've taken everything that you've all said into account too!

Brits, in a sentence:-
'
Good Infantry, Good Artillery, Meh Tanks (Cromwell's good if well handled, Fireflys good - everything else is abit of death trap) and some good Recce Options (Armoured Cars etc).
The Market Garden book in particular has some awesome British Lists, plus if you get bored with them you can always say "These guys are Canadian" bingo yet more kick ass lists.
"Inns of Court" and "11th Armoured" in particular standout in that book.

^ That's why I like the British army and since my friend is playing as the Germans it'll be great fun having battles and stuff.
I would love to use a Recce squad (not sure on the termanology) since their save bonus seems to be pretty good and I would love to have some Dingos on the field!
Just wandering though, should I buy an army book since I've bought the Rule Book before buying any models? I've got £10 on the card so hopefully I'll be able to buy a single tank or something. Since I know with 40K everything just seemed to revolve around spending a fortune before you got to start an army.

There is a website called 'easy army' it has the books but a fraction of the price.
The nice way FoW works is that it's easy to have multiple lists but similar models.
Take the Cromwell lists, you already start with two versions (confident veteran and confident trained) trained is cheaper so you can have more units, but easier to hit.
But say you have a rifle platoon supporting your cromwells, all you do is buy another couple of platoons, move the cromwells to support and field a rifle company....
With my Germans I'm able to field almost a dozen lists!

Easy Army is amazing! I used it to get the 2nd Household Cavalry Squadron (w/ Welsh) list.
I'm going to contradict everything that I've said but I've bought 2 new Sherman tanks for the price of 1 from Ebay so I can take advantage of the cheaper, literal, price for them, the price came up to the cost of a single Sherman including P&P costs so it was a win - win!
It's definitely going to be worth buying another Sherman and 4 Cromwells next time I get the money to spend, like you said there's loads of lists with simular models, as long as I can field a HQ full of Sherman tanks and Cromwell tanks I think I'm set from looking at a lot of the lists!
I'm definitely going to have to take things slowly again though for maybe a month and a half just so I can get some pillow money to rest on, damn, actually I've only got about a month and a half left!
