Hey Folks. Title really says it all, we've been playing multiple point levels and we're getting ready to start a league for the summer. 1k same list. Here's my first take:

Avenger Class Fleet Carrier
3x Agincourt Gunships
2x Lord Hood Battle Cruisers
4x Attack Frigates
4x Attack Frigates
4x Destroyers

970

Its only a paltry 6 activations (my main concern) but with Tiny Flyers it bumps back up to 10...

Thoughts?

Looks good, but at thats not a lot of activation's which at 1k can get you munched (not that i can talk, my 1250 list is only 8 activation's with TFs pffft). Anyway, you can make the medium squad cheaper bey reinforcing it with a cruiser with a shield. That frees up 20 points and you lose 1AD with your torps at RB1 and 1 or 2 AD on your turrets (which leading with the gunships wont matter anyway).

Next up I would add the Lord Hood the big medium squadron instead. This will bring you down to 835. With the 165 points you can grab some much needed Escorts for the Avenger (and seriously at 750+ points ALWAYS get escorts). With the last 90 points, either go for small "ping" squads of escorts/frigates or an Airfield and get another 3 activation's in.

Anyway do or do not, just my two pence.

What would you think of trying to squeeze in an illustrious? That would add in another 3 activations and mines tend to be nothing to sneeze at...

The Illustrious is a good bet, and one of only two "good" KoB air units (using the term in terms of just stats compared to the rest of the KoB air, I fully say that its the underachievers that surprise you).

It IS a bit of a beast though, but it NEEDS to be in RB1. The turrets are a bit...meh, at least compared to being able to make a 12AD bomb attack ontop of two 5AD "sheaf bombs" (as in the mines, they work wonders as AoE bombs). That and the extra TF wings will more than help you on activation's. Just bare in mind Carrier fleets take a bit of micromanaging and careful use of your TFs, I'm not all that massive on them so I would recommend asking around the SG forums, plenty of carrier fleet advice there.

I haven't been able to register yet on the SG forums... some form of website error...

So if I did end up taking an Illustrious (and painting it like the Sheild Helicarrier ) Then i'm looking at a minimum of 290 spent on bigs with the potential of 365 with maximum escorts on the Avenger.

I like the Avenger if only for the beefyness it provides in the center... I've yet to use one as my Fleet Admiral Though.


On the TFs i really like the torpedo bombers, even though they don't have any MAR, the ability to be at range band 1 and hit ships on 3s means they tend to pack quite a wallop!

With two carriers i'd be able to cycle the flyers at a much faster rate as well.

New idea:

Avenger w. 3 Escorts - 225
Illustrious - 140
4x Attack Frigates - 100
4x Attack Frigates - 100
4x Destroyers - 140

705. A nice base i think. That alone is 9 activations...

With the remaing 295 (or i could cut into my smalls a bit) I think i need some Lord Hoods and Gunships, are you recommending something along the lines of the 2x Crusier, 1x Gunship and Lord Hood squad?

290 isn't a whole lot for larges at 1k+ points, about average really, especially as some fleets go for triple carriers haha.

Don't sniff at you're TB's mind, that +2AA can keep them alive better than the TT's, and they get that sweet +2MV (meaning their free movement goes up to 7" as well remember). Generally i would say stick to the wings that your faction does well, but hell I say alot of things, can't say using bomber planes has ever hurt my EotBS

The fleet looks strong, and with 300 points to spare can get you some good toys. As for the Reinforced squads, it's rarely a bad thing to take them, especially adding a battlecruiser to the mix. The only thing they really suffer from is the high points cost/activation pressure, but with a carrier fleet that gets mitigated somewhat.

For reference, as I'v said my 1250 list gets 8 activations including TF's simply because of the x4 gyro squad and reinforced naval squad eating nearly half my points for 2 activations. There may be "better" ways to spend my points sure, but end of the day I love using those two squads. And thats the main thing. Though i AM toying with the idea of using four x2 frigate squads as "ping" units just for spreading out and harassing, and gets me up to a more reasonable 10 activations (will be trying that one tomorow night i think)

Sorry i'm having difficutly figuring out what TB and TT means hahaha. Are they flyers?

The only reason i think i opted for the Illustrious was to bump the activations and use those sweet mines, plus i felt the Illustrious would be better than the battleship in this list with the Lord Hoods adding their (over the top so) impressive firepower.

So with 300pts I can look into Lord Hoods and Gunships. do you have any major recommendations?


EDIT:

We're also as a club wondering what the standard tournament point level is. That's what we're shooting for with this upcoming league. Any suggestions?

Tiny Bombers and Tiny Torpedo

It depends what you want, I wouldn't "personally" go with just 2 hoods, but i'v never used them myself. For 290 points, it IS a tight fit as even 3 cruisers + hood comes to 300 points, 10 over. If your friends are cool with 10 points here and there, id go with that OR gunships (both/ a mix would see a bigger going over of points).

Spartan seem a bit light on the ground as being closer to a historical game than anything, tournies haven't seen a whole lot of official backing (I can only remember 1 in all honesty and that was recently)

Right click and "save as" the briefing sheet if your on chrome. Their ideal is apparantly 750 points, no Dreads, 40% large/massive, 70% mediums and 40% smalls.

That SHOULD be a good amount for a tournie, wouldn't recommend 1k points as it would take too long (even 3 turns of 750 can easily take up to 2 hours alone).

That said, 500 "rapid response" could work, my group has dabbled with. No force organisation, no TFs, no massives and no dreads. Can do a whole game in around an hour.
