weekly game yesterday, against legion again. again, I've struggled a lot. not bad as last game, but my opponent still manage to easily outmanouver me, while Circle should be the very mobile faction... more generally speaking, I'm often finding myself reacting to my opponent's move, instead of leading the dance myself. so I was wondering, probably I'm missing something / doing something wrong.

general suggestions, considerations about the subject? common mistakes made by newbie players?

Are you playing just for caster kill or are you using SR scenarios?

We're on the way start playing scenarios. Hopefully yesterday's game will be last one played just for caster kill (yesterday we should've played scenario already, but noone had a printed copy, pc was shut down, so just gone for caster kill. lazy us )

Well, that is my recommendation then. Play with scenarios.

If you just use caster kill it makes it too easy for the Legion player to always keep you at arms length and weaken you with ranged before killing you in mellee.

If you add a scenario, that will force him to defend or attack a specific piece of the table, making it allot harder to avoid you.

I'll agree with the scenarios comment.

If you're playing against other players of roughly equal experience and you struggle constantly do anything meaningful with regard to catching their models 90% of the time playing with scenarios will even things up.

The game is really designed with scenarios in mind and without them there is nothing to force engagement.

I mean no offence here, but it also sounds like you need to work on your skills a little bit.

I've seen a few people come on here and complain about what sounds like they're just having a few problems with the fundamentals.

Practice, practice, practice. If you're used to 40k, yes, the basic rules are easy to grasp, but its the intricacies of the game which makes it so great.

No offence taken. Maybe I'm unable to make it evident in my writings as I would want, as English is not my main language, so subtle meanings and difference between words elude me, but I have no intention to deny my faults at all. in fact I'm quite careful about slipping on cheap complaining. Time ago I was told that deny your faults prevent your improvement. This is the very reason that lead me to wonder if *maybe* before speaking of specific units and their tactics, there's something behind I still have to comprehend.

Are you the only 2 players?

or are there players with other armies?

Other local players who had played against that specific player and won, might be able to offer insight in what they did to achieve that victory

yes, we have two other Legion players (one play Mercenaries, too), and one Khador. asking for hints would be pretty mundane, as he change list every game. also I myself have already beaten him a few times (always assasinating his caster).

An idea of the lists would be good. But in general, I find Legion a lot squishier than Circle but they do have advantages like eyeless sight and flight. But seriously, you should be able to alphastrike them hard

point his Legion lists change every game: last one was eTag, 2x Shredders, 2x Carniveans, Seraph, 2x Shepherds, Succubus.
mine was: eKaya, Gorax, Feral, Stalker, Stones+UA, Blackclad, Celestial Fulcrum (still waiting bloodtrackers).

random considerations:
· while Fulcrum is great to clear infantry and hit stuff behind other stuff, it's not so good on screening my stuff, against the above list at least, as both Carnivean and Seraph are able to hit models close behind the fulcrum (ok Carnivean has RAT4 and Kaya DEF16, but boosting with the spell that allows +1die/discard lowest she can be hit).
· channeling is great (but I used to rely on it only with Cryx) and Muzzle is a spell more useful than first reading lets you think. for this sake I was thinking if maybe I should pick a Woldwarden, even if Kaya usually carries only furries with her.
· still have to understand what "roles" I need, or call them slots, if you like. i.e. how many beasts/heavy hitters? how many anti infantry? and in case I face an army like the above one what could my anti-infantry stuff do?
· also, would be worth to spend 2pt of stones just to keep them sitting around the warlock?

probably AMMP above is right, I need lots more practice, but given one job "and an half", housekeeping, family, and other stuff, I consider myself lucky to being able to play one evening a week.

I like this

"So, do please come along when we're promoting something new and need photos for the facebook page or to send to our regional manager, do please engage in our gaming when we're pushing something specific hard and need to get the little kiddies drifting past to want to come in an see what all the fuss is about. But otherwise, stay the feth out, you smelly, antisocial bastards, because we're scared you are going to say something that goes against our mantra of absolute devotion to the corporate motherland and we actually perceive any of you who've been gaming more than a year to be a hostile entity as you've been exposed to the internet and 'dangerous ideas'. Why don't you pick lists or models you have trouble with and ask the legion player if he would play those consistently until you get a better feel for how you can handle them? I can tell part of the problem is the revolving door of threats you're facing. You need at least 2-4 games against the same (or at least similar) lists to lean some counter strategies.

another idea: maybe next time I'll can try to get pics and write a brief report here, so you can better understand what I'm doing wrong.
