Hey all, so with the new Tau codex ive decided to start a Tau army. But I've always played CSM and Dark Angels so I'm a bit new with brighter colours which is what I want for my tau. So does anyone have some tips for painting bright colours also, what colors look good for tau? I was leaning towards either a toned down yellow or bright blue, any input is welcome!

Something to keep in mind when painting Tau is that you usually need 3 colors. You need a color for their hard armor, soft armor and usually a Sept color. You could actually use both colors you mentioned, I would use a khaki color for their soft armor, the blue for their hard armor and the yellow as their sept color. Or another idea is to paint the hard armor a solid blue and paint the soft armor in a camouflage pattern to contrast. Also the dakka gallery has a number of paint schemes (my gallery included) you could use for inspiratiion and Bolterandchainsword.com has a Tau painter program.

Try and pick a colour which you can use a wash over the plates to fil in the lines. I foolishly chose white meaning i had to paint inside the gaps rather than being able to just get a dark wash into them.

Have you tried painting white, washing with black then going over the plates carefully with white?

I did try that but if anything it took longer and also meant i couldnt zenithal the suits.

Thanks for all the input! I thin I'm probably going to do the blue for the armor and yellow for the Sept. Thanks everyone! And thanks for the washing tip

Most people paint the hard armor a lighter color and the soft armor a darker color. By reversing this, you can sometimes end up with a really eye catching scheme.

Yeah the blue is definitely it, the red was close second but I find myself still wanting the blue. I'll make sure to post pics of my final decision once I actually have some models painted. Thanks again everyone!
