I set some minis in some Mean green and let them soak for 24 hours. Everything came off fine except the Chaos Black Spray. I mean the actual paint from the spray is on there, it isnt just stained plastic. Is this stuff supposed to just stay on? Are my now clean minis basically primed?

i use L.A. totally awsome and it works aonders, like mager wonders but the choas black primed ones ewither the primber dosent come all the way off or it stains the plastic. its not just you. also had the same results with simple green. the only cleaners that strip away that primer also eat plastic lol

If it was primer, it bonds with the plastic (that is it's job)

I've sat models in simple green for weeks and the primer would only come off after some toothbrush scrubbing on the hardest edges.

As above - I just use a generic black spray to undercoat my models not and actual primer which can etch into the surface.

I once got a space marine commander from ebay that was covered in thick paint and and entire tactical squad that was simply undercoated in black spray (seperate auctions and sellers) - I left them to soak for a month (no probs )in simple green.

The tactical squad fully stripped of paint after a scrub with a toothbrush.

The commanders thick paint came of easy enough but the black primer never did, even after an extra two weeks of soaking and many extra scrubs.

I guess it depends on what is used to undercoat/prime.

However I was pretty sure that Chaos Black spray was just paint and not primer?

I have painted the black commander parts with no problem though.

I'm not sure if its a spray paint or an actual primer. I just know that the Chaos Black Spray won't come off the minis I tried to strip. I mean, if it is meant to stay on and they are ready to paint again without priming then I am fine with that. I am just not sure if thats how its supposed to be.

A lot of regular spray paints are enamels, not acrylics, which makes them somewhat more difficult to strip with the gentler solvents. A sprayed undercoat, even if not a true primer, is bound to take more work to remove than subsequent painting. You're not alone.

As for whether you need to remove it - if it's thin and even enough, you can just ignore it and proceed as usual. If you don't think you could paint a decent finish without removing it, it's time for more soaking and some elbow grease. With a bit of work, even the plastic-safe cleaners can remove moderately stubborn spray paint.

i have painted a few of mine that where still black from the primer/paint, there fine. they looker better then ever in most cases
