Deployment

I was hoping to send fast models into the mix early on, and allow my bigger units time to join the fight. I figured his Grey Knight Warp Quake and Coteaz would negate any point to me deep striking anything!
We rolled four Objectives. He put on in the tower that he always places his Long Fangs in, and on behind the rear trench, with his Grey Knights in power armour. I put on just by the staircase and one in front of the forest in the middle. I figured my objectives would need to be on his side of the board as well, as I didn’t want to leave anything behind!

Coteaz seized the initiative!

--

Battle:
Spoiler:
Initial Plan
I decided that my daemons were going to suffer badly from the Grey Knights along my left flank, and so I decided to send my bikes over there to fight them. I already had my rhino full of Slaaneshi marines on that side, so that was okay. I had deliberately chosen to set up first to reduce the amount of shooting turns he would have, but Coteaz had negated that choice for me, and also allowed him to react to my deployment, the worst of all worlds!
I realised that my Flying Prince needed to hide better as soon as I got a turn, as he wasn’t Zooming yet.

Turn One:
To my surprise, he moved a few units closer to me, heading up into the forests. His Long Fangs shot up my flying Prince and knocked the Combi-Bolter off my rhino.
6The Rhino moved flat out across the hill and dove in towards the middle of his line, hoping to set up a space with no Overwatch available. My Seekers moved up through the ruin, closely followed by the Fiends, ducking into the ruined tower on my right flank. They were joined by my slighter slower Daemon Prince. The Bikes began a long trawl leftwards.
I rolled Dark Prince Thirsts, but even with four instruments and no engaged enemy units on the field, I rolled no hits on the Wolves. Then I ran everything I could, but rolled low runs for most, even with fleet.

Turn Two:
He shot open the Rhino, letting me drop my Slaaneshi Marines. I am curious, he didn’t blow up the Rhino, just removed all its hull points. Should the Dirgecaster have remained in effect? He also shot my Keeper down with his Long Fangs. The Stormtalon arrived from Reserves and shot lots of my units. He disembarked his Wolf Guard and both them and the Land Raider shot at the Seekers. My entire unit of Seekers was destroyed, including the Herald.
My bikes continued to move across, in front of the wall. They fired their Melta and Plasma at the Stormtalon, hitting with one Plasma shot but failing to do any damage. My flying Prince headed towards the tower, Zooming to hopefully survive long enough to fly up and kill those Fangs. Tzeentch attacked the field during the Shooting Phase, but did nothing. The Fiends and Daemon Prince on my right flank managed to charge the Wolf Guard, killing half of them in the first round of combat. My Slaanesh marines charged the Grey Knight Terminators and I had to Challenge Coteaz. My Power Sword did nothing, while his Hammer hit me hard. Thankfully, I passed both my Feel No Pain rolls!

Unfortunately I then failed my Morale Check for losing the combat and fled back through the Daemons heading across the field.

Turn Three:
To begin with, he moved his Stormtalon across and shot down my flying Prince. Then he opened fire on my bikes, taking them all down, and saving his Melta shot for last, Insta-Killing my Chaos Lord.

His Rune Priest cast Jaws of the World Wolf across my line, but Adamantium Will provided my Herald with a Denial.
My Chaos Marines failed to rally and kept running back across the hill. I rolled Dark Prince Thirsts again, and this time I got four out of the six unengaged Space Wolf squads! The Rending hits paid off, breaking the Long Fangs on the stairs.

I finished off the Wolf Guard and consolidated my Prince to hopefully Smash the Land Raider.

I declared a ridiculous 10” charge against the Grey Hunters at the far end of a trench, weathered their Overwatch and managed to just make the charge!

Another squad of Daemonettes charged around the wrecked Rhino to assault the Grey Hunters in woods.

Turn Four:
The Stormtalon went into Hover mode in order to turn and bring its guns to bear on my line, ending its turn on the difficult terrain of the trenches and becoming Immobilised.

The regrouped Long Fangs Snapfired their Lascannons, but did nothing. On my Left Flank his Terminators shot the heck out of the Daemonettes heading around the wall. The slower Prince was shot apart by the Strike Squad at the back and the now immobile Stormtalon.
My Fiends headed towards the stairs, hoping to take out the Long Fangs there. I declared a charge with the remaining Daemonettes that had been shot at last turn. Overwatch finished them off.

Turn Five:
The Fiends were shot down. Coteaz and his Terminators joined the Grey Hunters fighting the Daemonettes in the woods. I challenge Coteaz with my Herald, for the hell of it, before realising that was a very stupid idea. Dark Excommunication knocked out the useful parts of the Herald and he was hit hard. Thankfully, he passed his Daemon Save!

However, the Daemonettes then lost the combat by four and rolled an 11 for Instability, killing off the remaining models…

The Space Wolf units Consolidated to the Objective that was sitting by the wrecked Rhino.
In my turn I do nothing with my few remaining Chaos Marines and finish off the last Grey Hunters fighting the Daemonettes on my Right Flank. After that, they Consolidate onto the Objective at the end of the trench.

Variable Game Length:
The Game Continues; however, I concede.

Objectives:
Technically I lost, but
Daemons - 3
Space Wolves - 13 (Warlord, First Blood, 3x Primary Objectives, 2x HS VP)

Final Thoughts:
Spoiler:
I think I undermined myself by trying to redeploy the bikes to the far side of the board. I should have sent them forward as fast as possible, especially if I could have got my Melta into range of his Landraider
I should not have been so afraid of using my Lesser Daemons on his Grey Knights. They were in a poor position, but 1 wound negates the Insta-Death, and Rending could have been useful.
I REALLY needed to do a better job of hiding my Keeper in the terrain until he could be sure of closing with the enemy.
I think I should have kept one or two units for Deep Strike. Although the Strike Squad with their Warp Quake (not to mention Coteaz) could have caused a lot of trouble, it may have allowed me to roll one flank or at least saturate him with targets, instead of letting him pick them off fairly leisurely. I might even have got into combat with the Long Fangs, stopping the threat of his big guns!
I should have sent the Fiends up the flank covered in trees, in order to charge along with other squads and negate the Initiative 1 effect of the cover.

The KoS can only have 50pts worth, yours has 60. Sounds like quite a tough match up!

Huh, you're right. I wonder where I got the impression that I could take 60 points on Greater Daemons? As to the game, yeah it was tough. I felt like I was climbing uphill from early on!

Just as a heads up, neither the SW nor GK codex has a Storm Talon. You may already know that, and let him use it anyway, but just in case you didn't

He was using Death from the Skies, didn't that allow it as a fast attack in any marine codex?

Nope. Death From the Skies opens the Storm Talon for Vanilla and Black Templars. Not Blood Angels, Grey Knights, Dark Angels or Space Wolves. BA and GK have the Storm Raven (as do Vanilla), and DA have their own fliers. SW are currently without fliers at all.

Oh really? SeemsI'll have to have a good look at Death From The Skies. He'll be upset if he bought a unit he can't use...

Ya he could just ally with Codex Marines pretty easily though to get it. Still, you could choose to be a charitable opponent and allow them to use it.

Allying it from regular Marines would require another HQ and Troops first, and stop him using any Grey Knights.

We'll see if it annoys me enough that I get picky and say no It seemed fine in this game.
